I had implants placed in my lower jaw about seven weeks ago.
Everything has been fine. I noticed this afternoon that it
appears that there is a separation in the gum, possibly where
stitches were, and that I can see what I think is the top of
an implant. Naturally, this occured on a Friday afternoon after
my periodontist's office has closed. Is it anything to be concerned
about? Does an implant occassionally become exposed
at a point several weeks into the healing process?

This is normal don't worry.
Good news is you may not need another surgery to uncover the implant.

Actually, as I look more carefully, I can't really see the top of an
implant as I thought. It looks more like the gum sank in one area and
left a gray/black appearance. The area is oval/circular. I'm really not
sure what it is. Any thoughts?

Hi Steve!

I am assuming the top of the "skin" is intact. In the mouth that "skin"
is called mucosa as it is a little different from regular "skin." But it
functions quite the same.

If it is intact, the dark area is most likely the reflection of the
metallic structure just under it. You know, on occasion a tooth is
yanked and a tiny piece of amalgam (silver) ends up trapped inside the
gum/bone/mouth.

It appears to the naked eye as the same darkish or even black
discoloration just under the surface. Sure enough, we x-ray the area
and there is a small, radiopaque (white on an x-ray) area that confirms
the diagnosis.

Even so, go get it checked to be sure.
