Has Western Dental gotten its act together yet?

I am in San Jose California. I am disabled, on Medi-Cal. I went to
Western Dental because I have a broken tooth which I beolieve is my
wisdom tooth.

They told me that I have gum disease and need a 'deep cleaning' which
they hope to get approval from Medi-Cal for. They messured the
millimeters of my teeth. (If they cannot get approval or if my gum
recession (if that's what it's called) is too bad, and I going to lose
all my teeth?)

Also they said I need a root canal, I have 7 cavities (4 or which are
fillings that need to be replaced which they did part of) and I have
to have my wisdom teeth extracted.

They took FIFTEEN x-rays including a panorama (I hope I don't get
brain cancer). Is this standard?

I have read bad things about Western Dental but they all seem to be at
leastt 5 years old and none about the San Jose branch. I am wondering
if they are being on the level with me. Or if I need to worry and find
something else. There isn't too many options available with Medi-Cal
and dentistry that I know of.

TIA

so basically you are not paying for anything yourself. just getting
free dentistry. should be pretty happy about that. plus if you don't
feel comfortable, no one is going to force you to get work done. amount
of x-ray they took is normal.

This raises a larger issue ... actually its a HUGE issue. Dentists nee
to be TRUSTED. This means that while I always want to dispense optima
dentistry, I must also have several "fall-back positions" in my bac
pocket and allude to this while explaining dental needs to patients.

Why?

Well just read the opening post here and that's why.

Now to basics:

1. X-rays are about the only way that we can confirm that a tooth i
abscessed, gum disease, etc., over the internet. Other than that we ar
completely guessing, shooting darts at a dartboard as it were. So tel
us more ......

ABOUT fifteen x-rays ......

I am extremely fastidious about not over-radiating folks ..... I hav
checked the literature and have calculated how much radiation i
extant.

As of today, there is no problem. What may be discovered in the future
who knows?

Joel

PS~ Modern x-ray generators are way low compared to older systems, an
compared to medical exposure ...

Well I know for a fact the tooth is abcessed I can feel it. It is
swollen on one side. They gave me antibiotic. The other factors are
that I have schizoaffective disorder which is a cross between
manic-depression and schizophrenia (some psychiatrists say it IS
schizophrenia). This makes it hard for me to take care of myself when
I'm symptomatic which is often. It also causes errors in thinking. I
realize now that my medication gives me dry mouth. I had thought I had
motivation problems and 'couldn't get a glass of water when I needed
it'. However the reason I needed it, which I didn't realize, was that
my mouth was dry, I wasn't thirsty. Also I think I have an acid reflux
problem which I was trying to treat with antiacids, however I ran out
and I have problems going to the store because it's overstimulating
and I get paranoid. And third, I don't think I get enough citrus so I
think I'm suffering from some kind of scurvy. Also I don't brush as
much as I should because I forget and can't establish a regular
routine and I don't floss. It all kind of gets back to the
schizoaffective disorder, motivation problems and having a hard time
taking care of myself, keeping track of things, and the medication (I
now realize) causing dry mouth. Plus problems of concentration,
thought, and putting two and two together. I didn't notice that my
gums were receding badly. I know they measured all around, the length
of the tooth in millimeters, and I think the final number was in the
30's. I hope this gives you a clearer picture of the situation. They
also took a lot of pictures for Medi-Cal  (Denti-Cal) so the deep
cleaning could be authorized.

I guess I'm a concerned about how bad it's gotten. I've been sitting
here living in my head, hiding, frequently listening to my voices,
while my teeth rot. I'm afraid they're going to pull them all or
something if they figure I'm a 'lost cause' in the tooth department in
terms of the gum situation.

I am also concerned about my heart (I have a history of heart disease
in my mom's side of the family and they said my blood pressure was a
little high, sometimes I lose my breath for no reason though this
could be related to anxiety, I don't know) giving out while they're
performing these complicated procedures. Can they knock me out with
nitrous oxide or do they use that anymore? I will talk to them about
this.

I guess I'm just scared, given Western Dental's online reputation, and
the fact they have me sign a malpractice waiver saying I can't 'sue
them in court' if anything goes wrong... but I feel I have no choice
but to go there and have noticed there really haven't been many
complaints in the last 5 years so I wonder if I can trust them.

I have a bad disability and suffer a lot. I wish I were dead basically
if it makes you feel any better and would save the state money. Sorry
to be defensive but I don't know if you're being facetious or not.

Hey Phin!

Here is standard of care:

1. ADDRESS emergency (pain management) issues.

2. Evaluate entire mouth.

3. Go from there.

If you need one tooth yanked, or if you need root canal therapy, cal
around. Get a dentist to handle #1 above tomorrow!

They are being silly boys ....... a patient can never "sign away
malpractice rights! The nature of dental practice means you can neve
become fully informed without actually being a dentist yourself!

If a dentist is negligent, he/she is negligent. Period.

I have used Western Digital for many years now.
Some of my friends prefer Maxtor, and a few like Seagate.

Oh wait, nevermind.....

Western dental by nature SUCKS.  The waver saying you cant register a
complaint about them with a medical board without going through one of
their meiators should be a tip off.  Sadly you get what you pay for.
You really think any quality doctor is going to work at a bargan
basement place?  You think a place like that has anything in mind but
making money?  Not likely.  The western dental I went to screwed up my
xrays TWICE missing teeth.  They got my name wrong on my reckords
TWICE even after a faxed memo AND my mentioning it to them the second
time i went in.  The only dentist there a  Dr. Mohammad F Khandaqji
was unable to answer the remedial questions i had written down for him
due to his inability to speak english.  I only wanted x-rays and a
cleaning.  The cleaning with the sonic tool TORE my gums since the
tech was not paying attention, she missed most spots and completely
neclected the rear teeth and top.  The cleaning was a joke.  The
technician did not even get the back teeth and only used on scoop of
cleaner.  She gave no individual attention to each tooth.  When i
complained i was told in borken english by that i could not come back.

Weather or not that meant i could not have teeth done properly - or if
i can NEVER come back to that western dental is beyone me.

If anyone wants to file a complaint - i have the url's for ll the
forms.  THEN you may complain to ADA all you want  :)  I certainly am.
