Hello Everyone. I am a newby here and need some advice. I know
absolutely nothing about dentistry. What little I do know comes from
various Google searches.
I had 17 teeth extracted last Tuesday for new dentures. When the
extractions and alveoplasties were done, my dentist reached to his
table and picked up my new Valplast for the lower jaw and commented,
"Where's 19?"(he said this twice). I had no idea at that time what he
was talking about. He showed his assistant the Valplast and told me
he'd be back in a minute. Upon returning I noticed he had removed one
or two of the "teeth" on the Valplast. He then placed this in my mouth
and basically said I was done. The assistant gave me the information
that I needed to control the bleeding, etc. Being that my jaw was
completely numb and could not talk at all, I left it at that. The
receptionist handed me an appointment slip for this Tuesday. Several
hours later when I could feel my tongue, I noticed the slot for tooth
#19 in the Valplast.
The problem:
This Valplast has a hole for tooth #19 but there is no tooth #19. The
tooth or teeth he removed from the Valplast were #'s 26 and/or 27
which I still have. When he removed the tooth # 26 from the Valplast
I'm guessing the retainer that was supposed to wrap around tooth # 27
was also removed as I have only one retainer and that is on tooth #21.
There is a retainer around the hole on tooth #19. This is a temporary
partial which is to be replaced with the permanent in 6 months time.
It is very unstable with only the one retainer. What do I do? My
dentist is a man of very few words and didn't even tell me to come
back for any adjustments. I'd like to have a plan when I see him on
the 23rd. The charge on the temporary Valplast is $300.
The Upper Immediate Denture is OK.
One further question. Why do I have to wait 6 months for the permanent
lower partial?

You deserve an explanation. You will almost certainly need some
adjustment when you go back.
If this is not a cosmetic problem and your chewing is satisfactory, I
wouldn't be too upset with a temporary. Valplast is actually pretty
extravagant for any temporary denture, and $300 is pretty darned cheap.
Your gums and bone will continue to heal and change shape for some
time. The more complete the remodeling of bone and healing are at the
time you get an impression for your permanent denture, the better the
permanent one will fit. If the temporary can't be tolerated, there are
ways to adjust or alter to get a little extra time.

The dentist is still searching for the missing #19. I think he remove
it!

To give a really intelligent/meaingful reply, one would need to examine your
mouth. At any rate, if you have ANY questions on this, you should contact
your dentist and ask. From what you describe, it sounds like your dentist
removed #19 [lower left first molar] in your mouth and it was not present in
the partial denture. [After the initial healing, you might want to use
denture adhesive on the Valplast partial if it continues to be extremely
loose; ask your dentist about this.] After having teeth extracted, your
upper and lower jaw bones will change as you heal, and for that reason, you
will need new dentures when all the healing has taken place; six months is a
reasonable amount of time to wait for healing. Keep in mind that over time,
your jaws will continue to change, and you will need new dentures [or
rebasing of the ones you have] to maintain the fit. Btw, $300 for a
Valplast lower partial is really a bargain!!

Thank you all for your time and advice. I feel better now about what I
am going through. My dentist told me nothing about what to expect.
Again. Thanks.
