I don't have health insurance and although I am poor, I am not below the
poverty line, so getting assistance is difficult. I have 2 cavities right
now, one of which causes a lot of pain radiating all the way up to my ear
at times. I know I need to see a dentist, but about the most I could
possibly afford would be $300-500 total. I am afraid that I might need a
root canal or something on the one cavity and fear that the costs of this
may add up beyond my means. Any suggestions? BTW, I am in Anchorage, AK if
that makes any difference.

You won't know what the problem/cost is unless you go see your dentist.
Explain the situation. Might not need a root job - yet.

Ask around and find that patient-friendly, kind dentist who can help yo
.. even in Alaska, they are around. Just ask EVERYBODY!

Dr Fred Bouse in Fairbanks comes highly recommended, if that's any use
(my knowledge of Alaskan geography is fairly limited, and google maps
won't load right now).

Thanks for the recommendation, but Fairbanks is a 6-8 hour drive each way
from Anchorage.

If the costs are something you just can't manage now, they may be able to
temporarily address the situation and get you out of what sounds like an
intense pain. Then you can work out or plan your finances accordingly. You
need to do something!
Explain your financial situation and any decent (that is decent in human
sense, not skill sense) dentist will help you out of pain and explain your
options.
Good luck to you.

I agree Tony. Get a dentist to excavate (drill out)_ the decay, drop i
some calcium hydroxide (Dycal) and then some rock hard zinc oxide an
eugenol. Wait to see if the teeth are abscessed ......
Alaskan Dental Humor:
Why is dentistry so cheap in Alaska?
ANSWER:
