is recreational methamphetamine use detectable by dental exams?  And what
are the oral hygienic issues that accompany meth use?
Joel344 - 20 Aug 2005 01:06 GMT
Gee I do not think so although some people atrribute gross neglect t
something they call "meth mouth." But that is always caused by sugars
starches, and failure to brush off crudities ...... err crud.

Maybe if someone is high enough on crystal meth maybe they forget t
floss all the teeth especially the upper wisdom teeth or something.

Yes, but it depends upon the frequency.

Check out my blog: http://flapsblog.com.

There is an entire section devoted to methamphetamine and dentistry.

people who abuse meth tend to crave sugarly drinks...and theory is that
meth changes the pH / Immune systerm in the mouth... you can tell when
someone has been doing alot of meth by those black decay on the facials
of anterior teeth.
Joel344 - 20 Aug 2005 10:10 GMT
Thanks USC95 and Falp. I have seen the teeth at Flap's link below an
those types of problems used to be endemic in America (without crysta
meth!).

But the theory about craving sugar holds water!

So, whatever, if the patient is without funds for root canal therapy
crowns, etc, its denturesville .....

Well, maybe we'll be able to keep our lab man busy after all!
OH, Joel, I see you're back!  Not sure where you had disappeared to though.
I don't keep up with the latest gossip here.  I'm now working part time
again.  It's ok; maybe I'll do it another 5 or so years and then it's
quitsville again; depends upon spouse income too.

Dentistry is a great profession and an even better hobby. To combine th
two, all one has to do is to become true to one's principles. Then ever
day is a great day. Every case is a joy!

Where was I? My free newsgroup server went "pay" on me. Right at th
same time we encountered the last of the confrontations with Jan.

So it took a while to regroup and to rethink what this effort is reall
about. I like to hear more views, more ideas, more opinions, MORE, more
MORE. I can still decide for myself but an educated decision is alway
best.

So I am pleased with more discussions, not less discussions. How abou
others? Are you happy/sad with the newer increased participation?

What are the problems/ things you dislike?

How would you change them?

I personally do not like newsgroup discussion being harvested to
different sites on the internet.  I prefer to have some control over
where my postings are displayed.

Well, with google harvesting everything it certainly means whatever you
say will certainly appear some place.

Joel, where else does the SMD feed go besides dentalcom?

Hi Steve,

Better go to www.deja.com and then type in sci.med.dentistry in th
query box. What appears is our discussions in column A while in Colum
B are ads from comemrcial entities that have contracted with Googl
Adwords ...... in other words, in the words of W_B, complete spam!

Unfortunately or fortunately, there are many. One leading one i
www.MedKB.com which is Med KnowledgeBase. They also filter variou
threads so what appears on the nntp as the raw postings are somewha
bowdlerized at MedKB.

There are many. Each time I came across another one, I copied it to m
text file folder. I will go through and add to the list.

Well, there is a listserve and I get the free one for drugs but it's mostly
oral surgery related drugs and I would prefer general dentistry, but that
one cost like $80 and I couldn't afford it for a few years.  Maybe I'll
subscribe to it as I don't really like dealing with the public on this
newsgroup and I mean well, the same old same old over and over from you know
who and a few others for years on end.
I never knew you'd have to pay for Usenet separately from your ISP.

For yeasrs it was free.. now it is ~$15/year

It's a great service at this low cost

Why not just change to an ISP which provides free NG service?  You could
probably obtain dial-up service for cheap which provide NMTP servers and
cost less than $15 a month.  Just point your broadband connection to that
ISP and off you go.

Flap,
I hate to bing up this issue,
but methamphetamine has far more consequences than those stated in your
blog.    You would not know this, but, being a stimulant,  it has the
potential to transmit harm to a friend or family member of the meth user.
The classical outcome could be crohns or Ulcerative Colitis.    Crohns and
UC are usually in the background or nowhere in the discussions of meth, but
because it has taken on an importance here, I will reiterate what it can do
to an unsuspecting
second or third. party  who need not be on meth.   Stimulants have the
potential to transmit harm to others.    What it does to the user is
unfortunate, but that is a choice the person makes, but cannot realize that
the consequences extend to innocent people with whom the user has a mind
connection.    That transmitted harm continues whether the two or more
persons are in the same room or miles and miles apart.   (even Sri Lanka, as
an example, as has been humorously suggested)   But the harm is real.     On
the crohns group, at one time a child of 8 whose mother was on meth was
suffering terribly.   Her grandparents were taking care of her.   and would
not believe this theory, but finally questioned it more thoroughly and I
believe accepted it, as no more was heard about the child, Amanda.
There could be a book about the extended harm meths and all stimulants do to
others, but as has been noted here, it is not a scientific theory, (nor is
it a logical one, may I add)   but that does not exclude it from being fact.
When a football player (age 23) died of  unknown causes on the news today,
stimulants can be suspected.   Some friend thinking of the football player.
So the damage done to the meth user is minor in my opinion as what it can do
to an unsuspecting person or at least equal.
This unknown problem needs to be researched.   Of course the very nature of
the theory makes it difficult to research because people are involved, and
it requires truthfulness and forthcoming testimonies of the users of meth
and that  likelihood  for truth  is 0.1%. And that is a generous figure.
Of course. crohns can be caused by any stimulant, legal or not.
And the list of drugs is long, meth, marijuana, cocaine, xanax, buspar,
depakote, natural herbs, kava kava, st johns wort, anti-depressants, etc.
etc. etc.
A separate problem with meth can bring it to the forefront of what all
stimulants can do.
More than you expected, but it should be known that meth  use  and other
stimulants carry a manmade harm to others by mind/body connection.

No such thing as "recreational methamphetamine use".
There are no accepted medical uses for methamphetamine.
Causes *permanent* organic brain damage, and permanent
psychosis.

O/T?
You are penny wise and dollar foolish.    Get your priorities straight.
Don't mean to preach, but why jeopordize your teeth if there is even a
fraction of a doubt.    Anti-depressants can serve the purpose just as well.
This isn't what you asked, but it is the Mother Theresa in me.
or so I am told.
