If there is a hole in the tooth (cavitation or cavity) you get oil o
cloves which is 98% eugenol. Get it at a drug store. You place a tiny
tiny piece of cotton on a napkin and drop a tiny amount of liquid ont
it. A bit of toilet paper will also work.
Next, you blot, blot, blot and blot the excess liquid out. Now was
your hands thoroughly as the eugenol on the tongue is nasty stuff!
Place it inside the hole.
Leave it there. Instant relief, if its "hyperemia."
If the diagnosis is "abscess," then this will not help.
Tell us more ....

Is there an otc salve/med that will minimize the pain
from an abscess? I'm asking these questions because
i'm putting together a small carry along medical kit.

The dentists can advise on the meds, but ice water can sometimes give
instant (though temporary) relief of abcess pain.

A dentist told me that ice water could possibly crack a tooth!

Vaughn is correct.
The ice-water dentist needs to repeat the tenth grade.
ANECDOTE:
A new patient was scheuled. As it was the appointed hour, I was
glancing up and down my street. I called out to the dental assistant,
"The new patient ... get ready for a periapical x-ray on tooth #13 or
#14. Its abscessed."
MY SECRET TO DIAGNOSIS:
It was mid-Febrary, snowy and here comes some fool walking down my
street looking for the office with a 32-ounce Taco Bell drink, loaded
with ice!
How did I know it was #13 or #14?
By how he was tilting his head!
Joely
PS- IT WAS # 14!

Hey Joelly,
Nice but cold water will also help during the last stages of
irreversible pulpitis.

Watered-down vodka is a no-go for me.

Any tooth that is going to crack from ice water is on its way out anyway.

I cannot imagine the scenario where ice water cracks a tooth.

OK, first you prepare the cavity, fill it with ice water....
...then you freeze the patient's head.
Not a practice builder.

First, I'm a repairman, not a medical person. Don't even have a CPR card, or
a first aid card. So, what I write below is a list of things I've tried on
my own tooth aches. Please don't consider this advice for your tooth ache.
Oil of cloves worked very well for me. Mine wasn't a hole in a tooth, so I
couldn't pack it in. But a dab on a cotton swab worked OK.
For me, anbesol or oragel (benzocaine) was not useful. However, Kanka worked
very well.
Ibuprophen worked well. Two every two hours. Ibuprophen and acetaminophen
combined are very tough on internal organs such as liver and kidneys.
However, the combination made the pain a lot more bearable.
Most of the time, my tooth aches have been accompanied by infection, so
amoxicillin has been a BIG help for me. All the penicillins need to be taken
for ten days, even when I feel better after two or three days. I've heard
that the fish pond meds from places like www.lambriarvet.com are the same as
human antibiotics, but I didn't hear this from the factory folks. So, I
can't say for sure.
My personal advice to you is to call your dentist and do what she / he tells
you. Might also ask for a scrip for "something stronger" to get you by.

Do good work.
It's longer in the short run
but shorter in the long run.

problem.
