Curing lights recommendation?

StovePipe - 17 Aug 2005 04:39 GMT Grettings again, all.
Our yearly dental congress is coming up next week, and I'm going to try to get a bargain on a curing light. (My locum dentist is going at the end of the month, and the Optilux 501 is going with her). I wouldn't mind continuing with the 501, but they usually give it to you as a bonus for buying a huge amount of Kerr Point Four composite. I have never used Point Four and I don't want to order it just to get a lamp, only to find that I don't like it.
So, if I got a bargain in a curing lamp, does anybody have any recommendations as to what lamps are worth getting?
Thanks SP

Flap - 17 Aug 2005 07:44 GMT Optilux 501 is good.
I wouldn't buy new composite to get one free. Depreciation and all, you know.
What do you use now? Lamp (besides your locum's lamp) and composite?

StovePipe - 17 Aug 2005 15:51 GMT > Optilux 501 is good. > [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > http://flapsblog.com We have an older lamp in the Hygiene room, but I don't remember the name. It has a light meter (red, yellow, green) on it, but it hasn't the output of the 501. When my hygienist is doing small fillings and sealants, I have her blast the teeth for a good 2 minutes at the end to be sure everything is cured.
Sealant is SealRite, composites are Z-250 (3M), Grandio (VOCO), Supreme (3M, for anteriors), Esthetilite (Danville, I think, microfil, also for anteriors. Bought that at the Ray Berlotti lecture last Oct).
Flowables are 3M hybrid, and Demark (don't remember the company name, it's Buddy Mopper's stuff;it's supposed to be more radioopaque than the regular flowables).
Occlusal (Mopper's company) is used when I don't like the finish on that sufface and is easily polishable (microfil, I think).
Not satisfied with the Supreme in the front, as when I polish it with the Soflex disks, there are always some small holes in the surface. So I re-etch and put Kerr FlowLine over it. That is another hybrid. I have had to do the same in the posterior, when I feel joints between the tooth and the composite.
Use the rings in the posterior, but it's hit and miss. I'm gonna try the triclip and see what happens with that.
Thanks for the Info SP

It is a Dentsply Spectrum 2. I put it on the light meter in the Optilux and it is actually more bright than the Optilux 501.... How can this be? The thing is at least 10 years old, I would think. Alexander Vasserman DDS - 18 Aug 2005 08:59 GMT I like the IVOCLAR's lamp and you can get the turbo tip it really gives you good penetrating power. Mind you I do not own one yet but I have my eye out on it.
Point 4 is good stuff. I used the samples. Normally I use Vitlesscence, Star flow, Kulzer, Renamel, Herculite XRV. I wouldn't buy the lamp to get the composite unless it is the lamp I want.

I realize there are comparatively few composites that cannot bu fully cured by LED, but still...
Thanks, though, I had't really considered it. I'll inquire. SP

Charlie - 18 Aug 2005 13:41 GMT Just got the Dentsply "Smartlite IQ", and I certainly like it, handles nice, seems to cure quick and completely, lightweight, easy to handle, cordless. May not cure everything but seems fine with Z250 and Filtek. Check out:
