As many of you know, I have been keeping track of the beryllium issue for
these last several years.  Just a few moments ago, I saw my first TV ad wherein
a law firm is fishing for those who have been exposed to beryllium...even those
who have lived near beryllium facilities.  No mention of dentistry...yet.

It was on the History Channel.

It has been going on for years, but never before in the mass-market sense,
such as with asbestos.

What is beryllium supposed to cause, and what does it have to do with
dentistry?
Joel344 - 09 Aug 2005 21:54 GMT
Good question ... Vaughn will clue you in. He is the beryllium
expert and he knows what he is talking about!

(PS- It has loads to do with dentistry).

Beryllium is a metal that is very poisonous in dust or fume form.  It
causes an incurable, sometimes fatal, lung disease called Chronic beryllium
Disease (CBD).  It is a concern in dentistry because certain cheap dental alloys
contain a small percentage of beryllium.  Beryllium is known to pose a very real
danger to dentists and dental lab technicians who work with the alloy, and at
least a theoretical danger to patients.

Great link, Vaughn. Thanks. Am I understanding correctly that there's
no beryllium in amalgam? Looked like it just went into bridges, crowns
and the like. Speaking of which, can bridges, crowns,  etc, be made
without beryllium? If so, can patients request that?

    Correct

Just request "high noble" metal.  Many dentists and labs only use the good
metal anyhow.  If you are an HMO customer, it will be a different story.
