I just had my bottom brace on today. A couple of brackets on the
bottom right prop up the molars on the top. The result is that I
cannot clench (or in other words, tightly bite down) unless I
intentionally move my lower jaw a little bit to the left.
I am not sure if this is considered normal while one wears dental
braces, or they must be adjusted so that I can naturally, comfortably
bite down?
I wanna know more before I make another appointment.
Thanks a lot!

While undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is impossible to have
a "good bite" while teeth are being moved around. You might not
want to order a steak any time soon <G>.
Good luck,
Fawks

I had braces for 10 yrs. I still wear retainers at night. I went
through a lot of different things, including fun rail road tracks, and
lip bumpers on the bottom. Your bite will probably be off for a few
weeks. Eventually it will settle in. Just from personal experience
with braces.

And there is one more problem with me. That is, it is so easy to bite
my cheek now, even if I eat slowly, I still bite my cheek 4 to 5 times
a meal.
I just looked into my mouth and found quite a few wounds on both sides.
I am afraid they are gonna turn to bad ulcers.
Will the pain go away, too, or it's gonna stay for the entire duration
of the treatment?

As an orthodontist, I would hope you would call me if you were my
patient. I'd like to take a look and see if anything could be done or
whether you just have to tough it out

I dunno about the biting of the cheek though. I don't believe I ever
had that problem. Yeah I had sores in my mouth occasionally from the
brackets maybe grabbing my cheek or just from sleeping on my side. I'd
definetly want to have that checked out. Your mouth with probably be
sore for a week or so. Depending on how they are moving your teeth. I
think the only 2 horror stories i ever had in my 10yrs of the things
was....Having a herbst dig into my back skin and cause a large ulcer
(my doctor came all the way down from his home in Pa/md line down about
2 hrs just to come to the office and fix my problem...That was the best
doctor i ever had). The other not so horror but still not cool was
when I had one of the nurses taking off the bands that go over the
brackets to help hold the wires in...She yanked the tool out of my
mouth and cut my lip. Needless to say I was not please with the
action. Despite a persons attitude you should not bring it to your
work.
Soon the pain won't even bother you though. I reccomend some oragel to
help with any discomfort....It maybe be temporary, but it does the
trick when you're trying to sleep and you're aching.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I think I need to call
my dentist and see if he can fix the cheek-biting problem.

Just curious, how come you need to wear brace for 10 years?

I had a small mouth, so I had a reatiner that would expand the top of
my mouth, I had an overbite that was corrected with a Herbst appliance,
(its been a long time so i forget some things) I had a few of my front
teeth not coming in right so I had another retainer to bring them down
right. Had lip bumpers, retainers...sooo many things. They even gave
me clear retainers towards the end of my treatment, but it didnt do
what they wanted it to do so I had another retainer made...I still wear
that retainer at night. I was not informed at the begining of my
treatmean (as well as my parents) that i would be wearing retainers
the rest of my life. I remember I used to ask the docs when they would
come off. After 4yrs I gave up...They would always say oh a month oh a
year oh this oh that and I gave up. I don't know many people that have
had theirs on passed 5yrs. Its ok though. My teeth look great. Even
though I complained about the pain soo many times it was worth it.
Its funny cause I used to joke about getting them when i was little and
i ended up getting them when i was in 3rd grade......
