Do UK dentists *have* to be qualified (ie BDS) to practice dentistry in the uk?
Sorry if this is a dumb question only my excellent dentist of 30 years has just
retired and I'm trying to find a new one. I had some very bad experiences with
dentists as a child and I guess am a bit apprehensive even now.
Is there perhaps an online register I can look up a dentists qualifications,
given just a name.
Thank you.

Isn't the licensing bureau online somewhere where you can get a specific
answer like this?

Maybe Dr. George would care to comment, as he is in the UK.

I hope Dr George's will followup on my query, I've just found a new practice (2
dentists) that on the door has,

1) FMDU (I *think* I got this right!)
2) Gothenburg (and a year)

1) I can't find anything on the web about it.
I guess 2) is where he qualified - but no qualification I can see

This practice is actively looking for patients while most other practices are
full. As it's a new practice I suppose they are building it up - but does seem
to be against the flow.

No sign of a BDA anywhere.

No ideas here

Hi Dave,

All dentists in the UK must be qualified and registered with the GDC.
If you visit the GDC site www.gdp-uk.org as letsconnect has suggested,
you can enter the name of a dentist (the official name, sometimes they
have middle names so it's better to search by surname) to see if
they're registered. Not all dentists belong to the BDA, which is sort
of a trade union more than a regulatory body. BDS would be the title
for a UK-qualified dentist, but there are a lot of titles out there,
especially for foreign dentists.
My advice: go private.

I'll second that!

Yes they have to be qualified, and they MUST be registered with the
General Dental Council (GDC) to practice dentistry. The GDC's website
is
http://www.gdc-uk.org/

You can search the registers and rolls there.

The BDA (British Dental Association) have a find-a-dentist section
here:

http://www.bda.org/bdaplus/quicknav_bdaplus.cfm?PID=weblinks.cfm&CONTENTID=903

The dentists listed here (BDA members) can also be searched by
specialty (and specialties are listed under individual dentists).

The best way of finding a dentist is by asking friends, acquaintances,
family members or colleagues for recommendations.

Forgot to add: keep an eye out for dentists who participate in the
DenPlan Excel or BDA Best Practice schemes, they're generally a good
bet.
letsconnect - 02 Aug 2005 17:18 GMT
Oops, that should've read Good Practice scheme.

Thanks to all for the replies - much appreciated.
One of the dentists I've now been able to find - he's listed as having an LMD
(Portugal). Maybe that's their BDS equivelant.

I had a crown done in Brecon Wales, problem showed up a year later when
another dentist   pointed out a pocket in the casting that was a food
trap... segue to advice that the adjacent tooth needed a root canal;
no pain though, that was 20 years ago and still no pain. The second
dentist sold me some crowns ( for other teeth ) which fell off a week
later ( he had bragged about the great work the crown maker did, I
guess greatly cheap is what he meant, this was in yankland ) .
Qualifications are nothing next to integillegent caring. Here in Miami
there are backroom/garage clinics, illegal dentists from latin usa
where bad work can be reported to the police...
