My only guitar teacher (maybe 2 years in the early '80s) was a jazzer.
Terrific player, but probably not the teacher for me. He taught me a
bit about chord substitutions, but I've long since forgetten it.
Most jazz players of necessity need a great deal of knowledge of
harmony--something I'll try to get one of these years.

Once you memorize the cycle of fifths and the relative minors
[something I'm still working on] things become a bit clearer.
Patterns remain the same, only the position changes.
