Red Cross: northern New England blood shortage early this year July 6, 2005 BURLINGTON, Vt. --The expected summer blood shortage is two months earlier than normal this year in northern New England. Article Tools Printer friendly E-mail to a friend N.H. RSS feed Most e-mailed More: Globe City/Region stories Latest local news So the regional division of the American Red Cross is curtailing the blood shipments it sends to hospitals. "I don't want to panic people and leave them thinking they could bleed to death, because we're not going to let that happen," spokeswoman Carol Dembeck said. "What we're going to do is begin cutting our standard orders back." Dembeck said the Red Cross would be able to respond with more blood if hospitals needed it because of a bad accident or other circumstances. Although blood shortages are common during the summer months as people travel more and donate less, Dembeck said the shortages usually occur around Labor Day rather than early July. "Because its showing up sooner in the summertime, it makes us quite concerned about what it's going to look like later in the summer," she said. Dembeck said decreased supply, not increased demand, causes summer shortages as regular donors become busier and donate less frequently. On top of that, colleges and high schools, which account for 15 percent to 20 percent of all donations, are not in session. Businesses also are less likely to sponsor blood drives during the summer. The Red Cross can do little to budget for the shortages because blood must be used within 42 days, Dembeck said. Dr. Mark Fung, medical director of the blood bank at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, said the hospital has enough blood to operate normally. The regional division, which covers Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, tries to have five days' worth of blood on hand, but usually has only about three days' worth. ------ On the Net: www.newenglandblood.org

Until (and in fact well after) a recent scandal that destroyed our local blood bank, I gave as often as I was allowed. That said, I have little faith in the idea of blood "shortages". Even though it exists largely in the non-profit world, blood is big business. Blood banks have shortages for the same reason that Sears has sales.
I used to give blood for "enlightened self-interest", and hope to eventually start doing it again. My blood bank used to (naturally) keep my blood, but they also did all of my blood chemistry gratis on a regular schedule. When I saw my doctor, I could just hand him the paper with the results and then not only save the expense, but skip that hassle of going to the lab first thing in the morning and standing in line with the rest of the herd whilst waiting to bleed into a test tube.
(If you don't know the term, "enlightened self interest" means giving to a good cause, or otherwise doing some public good, but also getting something back in return.)

I can't donate either. Ever since I answered all their silly little questions honestly. And explained the futility of them. For example:
Do you know all your current partners previous sexual partners? No. Unless one finds and marries a virgin, this question has to eliminate a lot of the population. I've been with my current partner since the 70's long before many of the newly emergent diseases were known. It didn't matter then, it matters event less now.
Have you ever had a blood transfusion or received blood products? IIRC my first one was shortly after birth long before the current testing. The most recent was in the 90's.
Have you ever been in close contact with body fluids of people with the AIDS, HIV, HepB, HepC etc.? Or been exposed to them? Well lets see now. I've been working in the dental field long before it was customary to wear latex gloves. I've treated many high risk and known carriers and diagnosed. My first HepB shots were back in the 80's when it was made using the actual virus. What do you think?
I could go on. All I know is the Red Cross labelled me as a "K" and have not let me donate since sometime in the 80's.
I say, forget the silly questions. Take my blood and test it. I make sure I'm up to date with all my tests and shots and my training provides with the ability to take more precautions than the general public would even think about.

carabelli - 07 Jul 2005 05:23 GMT Funny sometimes isn't it. First semester dental school we had a blood drive. I had the old bitty from hell checking out my health history. The thing was, 2 weeks before I was welding tanks and trailers working for a KC company that was kind enough to hire me for a summer job. Invariably, some splatter would burn through my patched up coveralls and leave a burn mark on the inside of my forearms (and other places). Of course she was convinced that these were needle marks and wanted to send me home or worse. She got an earfull and yes I did donate that day.

Here is a link to the donor requirements through San Diego Blood Bank (California)

Note: toward the bottom of the page, readers can find a direct answer to the old smd question: what does this have to do with dentistry?
And as for myself, regardless of the answer to many questions, I can't donate because I don't weigh enough. I don't even have to bother with the questions... and why I don't weigh enough is pretty much the result of "what did dentistry have to do with it?" ;-) well.... :-(

Normally I donate. Going to have to wait a couple more weeks to recover from the root canal, antibiotics, and all that.
Good reminder.
