Im 20yrs old.  I'm having a consultation tommorow, but Im trying to put
fears to rest.  I was some nerve problems so of course I will be
sedated intraveously.  My bottom wisdom teeth are coming in
horizontally...Now my qualm is....HOW are they going to get them out.
(I had 10+ yrs of orthodontic work still wear retainers at night)...My
lower jaw has no room.  There is a little straight space left and then
my jaw curves up (if that makes sense?)  I mean im pretty sure my
wisdom teeth push my 12 yr molars out from under the gums (they were
partially underneath the gums)  I am so paraniod of a broken jaw or
just not waking up.  Fears that stretch out the door.  And is there
possibility of this messing up my dental work...I mean I had everything
done from braces to retainers to the herbst for overbites.....im
concerned and needs some fears put to ease....I think one thing that
does help is I am going to an oral surgeon recomended by one of my best
friends

And Just to add to this.  I am extreamly self concious.  I had a tooth
broke from getting hit by a door (front #8 i think they called it lol)
and I had just gotten finished my orthodontic treament after the 10+
years.  I had to have a root canal done because the root never repaired
itself.  (although I have been told I have a really nice looking crown
nothing compares to the real tooth)  This also nerves me out.  My
friend just had his done 2 days ago, but he couldnt give me specifics
or anything.  All he said was " I was thinking Oh I feel bad for Kira)
So yeah I am paraniod in every aspect.

Well you are going to want a real dentist to answer most of your
questions (and I AM NOT A DENTIST) but I just had my wisdom teeth
removed a week ago so I can relate to many of your fears.

First and foremost - the fear of not waking up after IV sedation. Well,
I too was worried about that kind of thing, and while the numbers and
statistics are not absolutely accurate (hard to determine exact numbers
when others factors are involved - such as the procedure itself) the
odds I found repeated were death somewhere between 1 and 100,000 -
200,000 (and most were older/inferm patients and/or anesthetists who
were un/poorly trained). You have a FAR better chance of being killed
in your car on the way to the procedure, then actually having a
reaction to sedation.

Secondly, my two bottom wisdom teeth were impacted (one partially, one
completely) and it was the complete one that was the worse. They had to
drill into my jaw, then break apart the tooth to take it out. I know
that sounds bad, but don't panic. The fact that you're younger should
lessen the trauma a bit (my Dr. said that the density of the jaw bone
hardens signicantly passed the age of ~30, so I'll bet you've got a
plus there too. Even with my problems, it was manageable. The pain meds
will more then likely all but eliminate your pain. The only thing is, I
don't like the feeling I get from narcotic analgesics (vicoden,
oxycodone, etc.). I had to make due with OTC ibuprofen. If I can make
it with OTC drugs after what the dr. did to me, you'll be fine.

I'll leave the rest to the pro's - I just wanted you to rest assured
you WILL wake up (perhaps a bit groggy/loopy, and maybe a tad sore, but
it will happen).

Well, keep in mind that to become an oral surgeon, one must go through 4
years of dental school, and then at least 3 more years in an oral surgery
residency.  Oral surgeons are highly trained and remove horizontal
impactions [that's what you have] every day.  It will NOT be any problem to
remove this tooth, and there is practically no likelhood that you would have
a jaw fracture or some other problem.  I can understand your apprehension,
and that is to be expected, but rest assured that the procedure will be FAR
easier than you anticipate, and I am sure the oral surgeon will give you a
prescription for pain medication, which you actually may not even need;
sometimes just motrin or some other over the counter medicine will be more
than adequate.  Good luck -- you will be amazed how easy the procedure is
once it's over.  Ask your surgeon any questions you may have during your
consultation.

Yall are bringing my heart rate down a bit. lol  This is just something
i've been dreading for a bit.  Out of my 2 siblings I get all 4
teeth...They have 1 or none.  Lucky i guess.  (my mom only had one but
my dad had 4 and we have identical mouths)  And im a wimp when it comes
to pain.  I;'m just thinking of the time I got the herbst at the
dentist and I couldnt eat ANYTHING.  It was too hot, too cold, or not
soft enough.  Macaroni was no good to me. lol.  But ill be asking
question out the door.  Anything to put me at ease.  But thanks.

Well the consulatation went alright.  The bottom two will be quartered
out, everything was explained to me.  He said there might be a slight
risk of an open sinus (my top 2 teeth are close)  He said little chance
but its still there.  I got in 3 weeks to have it done....845am YIPEE
:(

Thanks everyone

Once they start the IV sedation, you'll stop worrying or even caring.

Ever had Valium?  IV sedation will feel like you took about 10,000
Valiums.

They actually offered me something before hand.  I said no just because
I thought i could handle it at 845...Ill just try to stay up all night
(wont be hard) lol

Let me assure you, you won't even know what's going after the sedation
is started. I don't even remember any sounds, cutting, etc.

Nothing. I only vaguely remember the walk to the car and the drive
home. Once it's done you'll realize how irrational our fears are about
this kind of thing (I share that same fear - as do many, many others).
