After researching numorous websites and news groups, i would like to
know if iam a candidate for upper jaw surgery.
None of my teeth touch except my back teeth....i have an 'elongated'
lower jaw (according to my orthodentist during my last visit) and i
would have to agree, it is quite prominant.
However, my upper jaw is similar to that of tom cruise, although sadly
not as dramatic...it is quite narrow at the front and it gets wide
towards the back...but my upper front teeth stick out slightly. Not so
much in-front of my lower teeth, but in a way that, if they were not
slightly 'bucked', they would fall just behind my lower front teeth.
I do not feel that my lower jaw is too prominant...i do feel that it is
one of my more attractive facial features...i also have quite large and
high cheek bones, which i also feel to be quite attractive....however i
feel that my mid-face is not in porportion with the rest of my
face...and this is especially obvious when i smile. When tissue paper
is put up in between my upper lip and my upper front teeth, my face
looks more porportionate.
I never feel confortable with my apprearence at rest, as my lips do not
touch unless i force them which caused my chin to 'push-up' on itself
and my slightly 'bucked' upper teeth make a bump which can be seen
under my lower lip (as my upper lip pushes above my upper teeth in
order to close my mouth).
Would, none of my teeth touching except one tooth at the upper back and
one tooth at the lower back, on either side ( i can only chew using
these back teeth, my last dentist said this would cause problems in the
future as the teeth wear away), as well as the strange relationship
between my upper and lower jaws make me a candidate for jaw surgery?
Iam a 19 year old male, i had my braces taken off when i was about 17
but i still wear a retainer and have check-ups...which are now on
yearly intervals..so I will discuss it with my orthodentist during my
next visit.

it sounds as if you have this figured out pretty well. it all makes
sense.
talk with your orthodontist and find out if he or she agrees with you.
your orthodontist can advise you how to proceed

Since this is within your field of work, would you be able to recommend
any websites with detailed information on upper jaw advancement?
I have searched about, but most are just websites for groups or
practices that specialise in this field and do not go into great detail
about what happens in the actually operation. I know basically what
happens, but i would like more detailed information.
