Can you apply to dental school with a pharmacy degree rather than a bachelor of science degree?

Both degrees take the same time to complete. I think it is better to
complete a pharmacy degree because with this degree, you are already a
certified pharmacist. And if you do not want to be a dentist anymore,
at least pharmacy is something you can fall back on, right?

A Pharmacy degree is a 6 year doctorate (Pharm. D.). A B.S. is 4 years.

A B.S. in Pharmacy was 5 years since the 1960's in the US. By the turn
of the millennium almost all pharmacy schools scrapped the B.S degree
and offered the Pharm. D. exclusively which required 6 years of college
after high school or 2 to 3 years after a 4 year B.S. in regular
undergraduate college. You must be referring to 4 years after another
college degree. In any event, a Pharm. D. adds up to a minimum of 6
years of college.

We had a pharmacist in our class, he got bored to death counting pills
so he went to dental school.

BTW these are seperate degree programs, you still need some college
to get into pharmacy school.

Yes you can.  My friend was in pharmacy and applied every year to medicine
and dentistry as he was repeatedly rejected.  He finally got into medicine.

I think the DS sees it as a sign of maturity if you are working towards a
degree which could help you gain employment.

That's comforting!  I hope never to be his patient.

That may be more a reflection of him being a pharmacist than a poor
candidate. When I was in Pharmacy school, the general perception and
popularly held belief was that it was difficult for candidates with
Pharmacy degrees to get in to medical/dental schools because admission
boards for these schools felt that pharmacists already had a profession
and a way to make a living. It sounds like an urban myth to me know but
that is how it felt back in the 70's.

I think there was an ex pharm in our class too.  I thought schools would
accept them to have a variety of people's backgrounds in the profession.
They might be good for dental product research too.  I think we had people
with accounting degrees and I had math.

Why? The guy will know his Pharmacology and medicament interactions
better than anybody.
