Chris gets another tooth ache

I get one, now and again. This current one is lower right, one of the pointy
ones front of the molars. But not yet to the flat ones. (Sure that is a lot
of useful information!).

I've got two pointy teeth which both have silver fillings. And a bunch of
other silver fillings, and a couple white fillings.

Some background. I'm 40 years old, male, never married. Live in the US, no
health insurance. I missed the twice a year cleanings for a few years, and
came back with a tooth ache. Only to find out that I'd got about 10 cavities
in the meantime.

I thought they were all up to date, and no more tooth aches for awhile.
Wrong! This one starte to act up on Thursday. Cold sensetive, and seems to
hurt more in the presence of sugar. Topical benzocaine helps, a little. Been
dabbing on Kanka, I like the waxy base that seems to stay on a little
longer. Oil of cloves didn't do much this time. Worked nicely with my bad
wisdom tooth a couple years ago.

Been popping an assortment of pills. Turns out if I take two pills every two
hours, I do fairly well. Been trying to rotate. Ibuprophen, naproxyn,
acetaminophen, acet with hydrocodone. See what seems to work. Yep,
acetaminophen and ibuprophen combined are hell on the liver and kidneys.

Got a call in to the dentist, oughta be in the chair some time tomorrow or
Tuesday. Any hints how to make the time more bearable?

I think rotating the ibuprofen (up to 600 mg) every 3 hrs with 600 of
acetaminophen is a good regimen.  A day or two won't kill your liver,
and hopefully your stomach will hold up.
Acetaminophen is more of a liver problem, but mostly with alcohol, and
since you're Stormin' Mormon, I'm assuming that won't be a problem.

Feel better,
Steve

Just to be clear: up to 600 of ibuprofen, followed 3 hrs later by
acetaminophen (NOT ibuprofen every 3 hrs.)

You mean it's not four pills every half hour? (wink, wink). I sure try to
take as few medicines as possible.

It isn't always easy finding the right words for problems we wish we didn't
have.
Steve put it well  and I will add good luck and may the cavities all be
small.
In the meantime a good sweet tasting snack from the Indian restaurant that
possibly everyone will  like.

Some nonfat plain yoghurt
Unsweetened fruit juice
1 very ripe mango peeled
blended in a blender.
Maybe a little honey added, if desired?

Tastes really good.  Drink with a straw.

Ah, that sounds like a healthy drink.

Like my dentist said when I was a kid, cavities never go away on thier own.

And, I do thank you also. Fortunately, I managed to make it through the
night without resorting to 911, large quanties of pills (well, large is a
relative term) or vise grips pliers. Sure makes me appreciate modern
dentistry, and modern pain relief.

Dear Dr. Bornfeld,
It's been an interesting evening. Woke up about 1:30 to take a couple
more pills, and sit and wait for them to start working.
A couple years ago, I asked a friend of mine what are the advice to stay
healthy. This fellow has since moved, but at the time he was studying to be
a nephrologist (kidney specialist). His reply was 1) Medically, smoking is
the root of all evil. and 2) get some exercise, even if it's just a walk
around the block.
You're right, as a LDS / Mormon I don't drink alcohol. My personal
policy is that alcohol is OK in cough syrup or cough and cold medicine.
Where it's used as a solvent. The LDS policy is that alcohol is used for
washing of the body. Listerene, hand sanitizer, scrubbing. That kind of
thing.
Anyhow, got to call my dentist in a couple minutes. He won't be there at
7 AM on Monday, but I can leave a message on the machine.
Thank you for the good wishes.

Maybe you should learn to take some of the pain, and ease off with
the pills.  Sounds like you have lots of tooth problems.  If it were
me, I'd seriously consider getting rid of all the problem ones, and
put some falsies in their place.

IMO, alcohol is poison to the body.  I never touch the junk, and there
are very few 20-year-olds who could keep up with me physically.

Newsflash!

Went to the general practice dentist yesterday. He says that there is
definitly some nerve invovement, and reccomended a root canal. I wasn't all
that happy with the idea. But, I was having to wake up every couple hours to
pop pills, and that gets exhausting in a hurry.

I did make the call this AM. The ectodontist had an opening in the AM, and
so I took it. He used a couple different shots of liquid anaesthetic. Which
didn't seem to numb the nerves actually in my tooth. So, a drop of liquid in
the hole he'd just made. Which didn't seem to help. A couple more syringes
of caine (into the root) and by this time he's muttering a tiny little bit
about how that tooth just doesn't want to numb. And some more syringes of
caine, and me flinching several more times.

Anyhow, it was about two hours. Had me pop four advil while right in the
chair, to get me down the road. And then a scrip for Vicodin generic.

The pharmacy had only Malanckro or whatever it was the useless white ones.
After asking them nicely, they made a call and got me set up with some
Qualitest, which actually do work. Nice of them to put forth the effort, and
nice of the dentist office to approve it. (Didn't cost the dentist office
anything to say yes).

Now, after two service calls, it's time to go to bed and sleep the sleep of
the dead. I hope to see you all in the morning. And then got to get an
appointment for a real filling in that tooth in place of the temp filling
plaster stuff.

Do you ever brush your teeth?

I do thank you. I asked at the dentist, and they gave me a chart, but it was
nearly useless compared to this one.
