gum boil

Hi,
Can someone give me advice. I had a root canal done in an upper molar
recently, in which there was an infection in the nerve. A gum boil had formed,
from which I  was squeezing pus, and the gum was very sore and tender around
this spot. After the root canal, the infection was still raging, and my
dentist re-sterilised the canals, and put me on antibiotics( METRONIDAZOLE).
A week or so later, and the infection has subdued-gum is less sore aand spot
smaller, however I am still able to squeeze a small amount of pus every 24
to 36 hours(as opposed to every half hour, when the infection was at its
worse. Do you think I will end up losing the tooth, or is there a chance the
infection will clear up eventually? Has anyone else had this problem?

Could still be the abcess from the nerve inside the tooth...or it could be
from peridontal disease (gum disease).  Can't really tell with the info
you've posted without a radiograph and clinical exam.

Sounds very similar to what what I had. Had a root canal done on a top front
tooth. Some days later noticed this spot/bump that burst reasonably
painlessly. (Mine seemed to leak more after I'd had a beer for some
reason!). It didn't clear up with antibiotics and the x-ray showed a cyst
had formed. I was eventually referred to a specalist with a view to him
doing an Apicetomy (I think that's what it's called). He took a more
detailed xray which he said showed my tooth had also split/crack. He said
this meant he couldn't do the op and that my dentist would have to extract
it. The extraction process was a lot less painful than having the root
done - no pain in fact. I'm not squeamish so I asked the dentist if I could
see the tooth after he's extracted it. Sure enough it had a vertical split
and the remains of the cyst was on the end of it. Looked like a little sac
about 4mm in diameter. Because I already had a capped tooth next to the gap
and a patch on the tooth the other side it was agreed that a bridge was the
best option rather than an insert. It felt very strange for about two weeks
(a joined together feeling) but thats fading. Overall the result is pretty
good.

>Thanks a lot for your advice.Glad you were happy with your bridge.
Unfortunately I already had a bridge over this area, and if I  lose the
tooth it will mean a longer bridge(two false supported teeth), which I really
dont fancy, or an implant supported bridge.. The implant idea is a bit scary
(not to say expensive!), and could mean a long treatment-bone grafts etc).
However, I am seeing the dentist this week, so guess I will have to trust his
judgement!

I don't know where you are located, nor what a normal fee is there.
Around here, we would cut the good tooth apart from the failed fridge
and leave its crown intact (usually). Then, 2 implants and 2 crowns
are about $6k. A new 4-unit bridge is about $4k. Add in 2  build-up's
of about $600.  Now we are close to $5k.  One or both abutment teeth
might need root canal therapy at $ 800) each.  You might spend as much
or more on the bridge as you would on the implants.  Plus, a 4 unit
bridge will flex and  put more stress on the abutment teeth than a  2
unit implant could.

>Thanks, Dr Steve, for your advice. You sound like you are a dentist! I am located in Scotland.
I have already had the bridge separated(leaving the crown on the good tooth
intact). The gum boil seems to have improved this morning, and is flat-so
fingers crossed! I definitely agree with you that an implant supporting one
false tooth is preferable to a four unit normal bridge. I guess I am a bit
worried about it being just below the sinus area ETC, and the invasive nature
of an implant. However, If it comes to that, I will take the dentists advice,
and try and be brave! Thanks  again for your help.
