Gold crown vs Porcelain

My regular dentist says I need a crown on a farthest back upper molar. He
gave an estimate of about $500 for what he called porcelain over a noble
metal. A dentist I went to for a second opinion says he feels a gold crown
would be what he'd recommend, estimate of approx. $700.

What's the difference between gold vs porcelain/noble metal as far as their
desireability for making a crown?

Thanks for all input.

Gold crowns are a good choice for 2nd molars - they are less traumatic
on the other teeth they meet, because they're "softer" on the bite
(comparable to tooth enamel). They also tend to require less tooth
reduction. Statistically speaking, they last the longest. They're also
hypoallergenic. People also like the feel of them.
Aesthetically, many people prefer PFM, but from a functional point of
view, gold tends to be a better choice.

If you want to draw attention to your dentist, you should definitely get
a gold one.
