I went to see my dentist about 5 weeks ago with a bad toothace. He
identified that I needed a root canal in one, possibly two teeth. I was
given a prescription for 30 vicodin, 16 Amoxicillin, and an appointment for
the root canal, scheduled for a month later. The next week I returned for a
refill of the Vicodin. Then again the following week. The week after that,
the week of the root canal, the dentist refused to give me another refill for
Vicodin, or any other narcotic, as he put it. My root canal appointment was
cancelled that week due to a miscommunication. However, my dentist did open
up the tooth to relieve the pressure. That did take care of the actual
toothache. He prescribed me Motrin 800 and more amoxicillin. Now it's four
days later, and I've complained of throbbing aches in the jaw below the tooth.
He prescribed me more amoxicillin. Still no appointment. Now my questions,
is it that inappropriate for me to request vicodin for this pain? And how
long should I use the same antibiotic to clear up one infection? What's
going on here? Thanks!

Your description is typical for a large clinic trying to remain
profitable with very low reimbursement levels of an HM0. If you are
paying out of pocket and getting treated this poorly, you must move on
to a different practice. there is no good excuse not to address your
pain in 1-3 days unless you refuse to pay for service.

You don't need more Vicodin. You need for the dentist to do the darned
root canal. Allowing you to stay in pain for 5 weeks is unconscionable.

I'm a patient, and have nearly no medical training. However, antibiotics
are typically prescribed for 10 days. Anything less risks reinfection,
anything more is a waste. Usually.
I can imagine you taking two or three Vicodin a day for a toothache. Sounds
like the DDS is being a bit stingy with his prescription pad.
As I understand the laws, it's illegal to use someone else's prescription.
So, if you call around your friends, explain the matter and bum a couple
Vicodin from them, please do it quietly. And don't write about it on this
open forum.

In other words, you aren't qualified to give medical advice.

To James W.,
More advice... but not medical advice. Is there some reason that you
have not been to another dentist? Perhaps there is no one else in your
community or ??? I may have missed a post with this explanation. Maybe
it would be a good time to look for another dentist. ???
Please understand that I know what it is like to wait a long time for
dental care that is necessary because of extenuating circumstances.
This is why I have asked if there is a reason why you have not been to
see someone else.
