Last friday I received a dental implant. The implant was 13mm. I was
born with a missing lateral incissor in the upper jaw, and one year ago
I got braces on to move the teeth in order to make space for the
placement of an implant. For the first days after surgery I took
Ibuprofen for the pain. Now I don't have much pain except that I'm a
little sore in the area close to my nose. If I press the upper part of
the upper-lip (right under the nose) I feel some pain and it feels a
bit swollen. It isn't the skin itself that causes the pain because if I
insert a finger into the mouth between the upper-lip and the gum, I
don't feel any pain pressing the upper-lip.
>From the look of the x-ray the pain originates from the where the
implant "ends". While it isn't particularly annoying I'm afraid if it
is an indication of implant failure. When I saw the x-ray I was a
little surprised to see how close it was to the nose. Is there any risk
that the implant was inserted too far up in the bone so that it has
partially penetrated it thus causing this pain? Note that there is no
pain from the gum or anything.
Is this pain/swelling to be expected 4 days after surgery or should I
call my dentist? I'm also wondering/hoping that maybe the pain could be
caused by the tension of the muscles in the area during and in the
hours after the surgery. The anaesthetic somehow made it difficult to
relax in that area and maybe that's why I'm sore? I have an appointment
on friday and I think I will bring it up. Would it be useful to have an
x-ray taken on this occation?
Thank you in advance!

I wouldn't worry about it at this point. The fixture was torqued into
position and could feel funny for awhile.

Great that's a relief! It's not that I don't trust the dentist. He
seemed very professional but I guess it was the fact that the implant
was so close to the nose (or at least that is what it looked to me on
the x-ray) that surprised me. But what are the possible dangers of
having a lateral incisor implant? Is there something that one might
accidentally penetrate? And what is the succesrate? From other posts in
this group it seems the rate is not as good in the upper jaw as in the
lower, but how is it for a lateral?

Upper seems as predictable as lower.
Have implant for #8, nose bled slightly after placement surgery.
No problems now, if the implant integrates sucessfully you should
have no problems with it. This may take up to 6 months.

What he said.....plus:
Those are questions that should have been answered before any
treatment was rendered. (not that 'we' mind, but next time
have treatment explained to you a little better <G>)
