Wife needs 2 implants

My wife (age 47) is about to have tooth #18 extracted due to abcess and
fracture. She lost #19 about 9 months ago. Dentist has recommended 2
implants at a total cost of $7500. This includes the 2 crowns. Now, we
are not wealthy. Like most people we have a few bucks in savings and
live paycheck to paycheck. This dental work will be a significant
strain on our family.
Implants are great! But the price is so damn high. When I questioned
her dentist about the need for 2 implants his nose got bent out of
shape and he said "well, what would you do if they were your teeth?" I
gave him a resonable answer that caught him off guard. I said I would
do an implant on #18 and forget about
#19. Or maybe do an implant on #19 then put a bridge anchored by #20
and the new abutemant on #19. He didn't agree and continued to
emphasize the superiority of 2 implants.
My questions are: My wife has no wisdom teeth so is #19 considered a
crucial tooth ? Is using an implant as part of a bridge a commonly-used
procedure? Thanks in advance for any feedback>

I had 9 implants done plus four sinus lifts. $ 20,000. Implant prices are
coming down.

It is not a good idea to do a bridge between a natural tooth and an implant.
But, you may readily get by with one implant. It is cheapest if you have one
implantologist do all work, from implants to prostheses. Most dentists split
the work between oral surgeons and their own bridge/crown work.

I obtained 6 quotes for my work. They ranged from 20,000 to 30,000, all from
implant specialists. Take your ax-rays to other implantologists and make
sure they all quote precisely on the same job.You can also try a dental
school if you live near one. Although I found that they are more expensive
than implantologists ($ 24,000). I also tried Tijuana: Prices ranged from $
3000 to $ 30,000.

$30k for implants placed in Tijuana?  No thanks.

Ahh but, you should see the amount of blue agave
that is provided.

If it were me, I'd do one the following:
1) replace both teeth, or
2) replace 19

I would not:
1) replace #18 and leave a space for 19.
2) splint an implant #19 to a natural tooth.

Implants are an investment.  If it is not an investment you are ready to
make, there are options.  Fixed bridge, possible removable partial if more
teeth are missing, etc.  Implants will generally save you more money in the
long-term as they are more permanent than the other options.  Bridges can
sometimes lead to another extraction and remake of a larger bridge.

Make the choice you feel is best for your family.

This will not work, you cannot attach an implant to a natural tooth.
Natural teeth move, implants do not.

See above.

#19 is more critical than #18.
Recommend implant/crown for #19 and you can always do
#18 at a later date.
