I just got paid for coming up to the office to read a
couple of newsgroups.  I was sitting at my desk sipping
on my morning coffee when the main line at the office rang.

It was only 7:30 am, but I figured my wife had gotten out
of bed and was ready to work the Saturday NY Times crossword.

Instead, after I answer the phone "Dr. Fawks' office", the guy
on the other end asked, "Who is this?"
I answer, "Dr. Fawks".
He continues, "Oh, this is Eugene and my son-in-law has a real
bad toothache.  Are you going to be open today?"
"No"
"Well he hasn't been able to sleep it hurts so bad and he went to
the emergency room last night, but they just gave him a shot and
some pills"
"If he wants it extracted, I guess you could come on up"
"We'll be right there"

They arrive in about 10 minutes, I numb him up and extract a lower
first molar with a huge cavity.  They pay, say thanks, and leave.

The scary thing is that I knew who Eugene was without a last name
or any other clue.  I remember back when I did work an occasional
Saturday (20 years ago) and Eugene called me at 5:30 am at home
to ask what time his appt. was!

If I wouldn't have answed the office phone, the next call would have
been to the house and my wife wouldn't have been overjoyed.

Who would ever want to live in a city?

That was good of you to help.  My son had a tooth crack on a Friday night
and we almost called the whole phone book before we could find him some help
in the morning.  He now sees this dentist for all his needs.  UM MOM Susan

    Well, my home number isn't listed (though I have a beeper).
    Of course, I've always worked Saturdays.

I started out working every Saturday morning.  Then I switched to every
other Saturday working 7:00-2:00.  The 7:00 appts. ran at least 30% no
shows and anything after 12:00 was hit and miss also.  I cut back to
8:00-12:00 two Saturdays a month.

No matter what I did, cancellations and no shows were always higher on
Saturdays.  By the time the kids got out of diapers, I just said the
heck with it and quit Saturdays altogether.

I haven't regretted it.

Good one!   ;-)

On a different note......

Smoked some great baby back ribs last weekend and fried my first
turkey.  We've been eating
lots of wilted lettuce/onions and picked a few beets this week.  My
stepmom gave us a bunch of
fresh strawberries as well.  Spring sure tastes good!  (especially
compared to spam)

Did I mentioned that both kids got 4.0's this semester?

I could never keep them ribs lit.

Glad to hear that you got as *fried* as a turkey though.

Bet your ribs were fresher than mine.  Smoked a pork butt for 12 hours
Sat. - had to get up a 5 AM and couldn't get back to sleep - was worth it.

First fried turkey???  I've been doing them for years, you live north of me
and they still call me a damn yankee.

Pretty cool way to do a turkey though isn't it.  Was there any beer
involved?  Lemme know when you're in town again - you can have some from the
extremely local Brewery.

Dolores bought the frier at a DU banquet earlier this year ($50) so
I figured I'd have to try it out.  I was impressed by the speed in which
a fully cooked bird could be delivered.

I only spent about 6 hours on the ribs, but they aren't as thick as a
butt.  I guess I will have to invest in a real smoker.  Indirect heat in
a Weber limits the size of the meat you can handle, plus you disturb the
smoking chamber every time you add charcoal or wood chips.

Any recommendations for a relative beginner?

Can't go wrong with a Brinkman bullet style that has a water pan.  Just be
sure to get the one that has a separate vented firepan.  The water keeps the
temps in the low 200s and you can use big chunks of wood.  That way it can
be unattended for hours.

Reading this thread, I am reminded of a thot I had not too long ago
while comparing the relative merits of practicing in the city vs the
country. I have voiced some of this before when this theme comes up, but
this time I think I know what I'm talking about.

<the Pipe tucks his thumbs under his suspender straps and prepares to
wax philosophique>

In the city, I run the risk of overdosing on old and stale Big Macs;

Rammed by some yahoo in a Hummer;

Hounded by rabid tax collectors;

...and held for ransom by some terrorist aliens with a Kalashnikov
shoved up my nose...

In the country, I risk bar fights with a moron named Mac;

Hummed by some yahoo in a Dodge Ram;

Body parts collected by rabid hounds;

...and held for experiments by some UFO aliens with an intergalactic
space-probe shoved up my arse...

Any which-a way I look at it, I'm gonna TOATLLY DIE!

So I based my decision on which way I'd like to check out, and how much
dentistry I could do on my own.

[SNAP!!!!!]

<the Pipe suddenly remembers he had his suspenders out a mile in
front....>
