I'm a trumpet player and have been told I need an apioectomy to #13.
How long before I can play again without risk?

Good question--and one I hadn't heard.  I hope Dave will answer.
Absent that, there will probably be at least one postop visit within a
week--I'd ask the surgeon at that time.  I'd assume you'd want to wait
at least a week.

Good advice. Thanks!

Play the trumpet myself.  I'd probably go with your surgeon's advice,
especially if he/she understands the dynamics of brass instruments.  Since
the mouthpiece doesn't actually press directly in the second bicuspid area
(unless you have one strange embouchure!).  The only concern is the
increased air pressure in the oral cavity, which probably isn't an issue
unless you play like Dizzy, with your cheeks out.

I'd say a week outta be enough for #13.  If it was an incisor, I'd want a
month.  If you were a Sousaphone player, I'd want a year!

Thanks for the advice!

Your expertise would be very welcome on www.trumpetherald.com. It's a
Website for trumpet players and there have been a lot of questions
about teeth, dental procedures, recovery times, etc.

It's a great site, one which -- as a player yourself -- you'll really
enjoy.

Best,

7 - 14 days.
