I really do hope a few of you (at least) reply!

I've shared here before that I feel comfy with dentists because not
only have I needed extensive dental work all my life (baby teeth even
all had to have 'pulpectomys' (whatever THAT is.),

But my Mom worked for the HUGE dental clinic of the Retail Clerks
Union, Local 770,  in Hollywood, CA.  (1960 - 1975)  She was their pbx
operate.  Therefore dentists et al were part of our social lives...

I knew as a child (age 10) that I would be a writer (though I wouldn't
have chosen poet - that came much later.)  From then on, I was
intensely focused on 'the arts'.  Barely passed high school and
College 'science' requirements!

So HOW did you decide on dentistry???  And when???  And why???

I was a science junky who graduated college as a chem engineer and
thought about getting an MBA.  worked for Pfizer two summers (not
testing Viagra I am sad to report) and realized that the last thing I
needed was a bureaucracy.  my fiance's family were all self employed so
I started thinking along those lines.  thought about medical school but
dental school seemed so much cleaner and rarely does anyone die in a
dental office.  I also like to think I have a nice way with people and
that only shines in a one on one situation not in a large business
organization.

graduated in 1978, ortho in 1980.  my oldest daughter wants to be a
dentist and I am thrilled

It wasn't in Groton was it?  They had a Pfizer plant there that you could
smell for miles.  After I got out of the Navy at the sub base, I worked a
civilian job in New London for a few months.  A little bit of my job was to do
some work at the Pfizer plant.  I quickly found out that the smell came from a
place called "fermentation".  I knew that because I had to do a job in there one
day!  I suppose the guys that worked there stopped smelling it after a while,
but I had no such advantage.

One of the communications towers that I am responsible for is on the
grounds of a sewer plant.  When I stop smelling it, I know it is time to go.
