Mark & Steven Bornfeld - 17 May 2005 14:52 GMT Driving to work, in the middle of Ocean Ave. bet. Ave J and K, I saw a dead opossum. A couple of weeks ago, a neighbor trapped a raccoon on her roof. Brooklyn--it's a jungle out there!

One night I was on 61st street in Manhattan sitting on the car waiting for my passengers to finish dinner when I saw what I initially thought to be the king of all rats. Turned out it was a very well fed raccoon that had ventured about 4 blocks from Central Park, where it probably lived.

Maybe they are an escaped experiment from Brooklyn College...isn't that nearby?

Dr Steve - 17 May 2005 17:20 GMT In Downtown Detroit, what looks like a raccoon is usually a large rat. I have seen rats bigger than raccoons there.

Dr Steve - 17 May 2005 23:16 GMT They used to get into the new buildings we were working on downtown. I chased a small one inside the Renaissance Building one time. It was only the size of a large cat. When it ran into a pile of trash ten feet high and thirty feet in diameter, I knew it was on its own turf, and I backed off. The sky-scrapers all have permanent pest control workers there five days a week. The rats get inside the walls during construction, and are basically impossible to get out. I had a family of rats jump out of my sweater one morning as I was pulling it over my head. Made me think of what it would have been like if I pulled the sweater over my head before they jumped out.

My money says it was really a big rat and everyone decided it was an opossum so they would feel better about it.

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > > carabelli In many of the suburbs on the east coast extremely large rats come out at night, wandering the neighborhoods. They are very casual. In fact while walking around a track a while ago one large rat was slowly walking around it on the other side.
I snuck up near one one night and suddenly yelled out scaring it. It was nearly my size but became very frightened. It actually jumped across the street, (I was amazed at its leaping ability) and ran into a houses , fenced in backyard where after 15 seconds I heard a large crashing sound.

In fact deer are quite common in the suburbs now. They do look kind of like rats in the dark and love to eat the grass off the lawns. They sneak around neighborhoods in packs darting in and out of peoples yards almost like teenagers up to no good, However, they have absolutely no fear of you if you are > 50 yards away. The problem is that when they move in packs across roads if one deer gets left behind when a car approaches, it will pause, and then sometimes suddenly try to run out in front of the car to cross rather than be left behind. This has caused a lot of accidents.

While driving a while back and making a U turn I stopped because I saw something in front of the car. There I saw a young bushy tailed fox pup jumping (it seemed like dancing) in the headlights.
