Guys,
I've got these crazy wisdom teeth (only three cause one never came in)
that protrude outwards. The last, top two on either side anyway. When
I eat they rub a hole into my gums. Safe to say I don't eat much.
Anyway my dentist set me up with an appointment to see a orthodontist
(sp?). Ok, so how painfull is this going to be? I'm a skeptic when it
comes to surgery. Four years ago I had both knees scoped and the doc
told me everything was going to be OK. He presribed me some pain
medicine then sent me packing.
I went through the medicine in three days and needless to say I wasn't
a happy camper :( I've never been in such sad shape in all my days.
My knees ached for six weeks. I had to use crutches which did nothing
for the pain. Now don't go thinking I'm a wussy. I grew up working
dairy cows and a day didn't go by that I wasn't kicked at least once.
Might explain my limited mental capacity :)
Seriously, I have a tolerance to pain medicine because I've taken
narcotic based meds since I was nine years old for migraines. I take
on average sixty vicodin 10mgs a year! I'm told that's enough to kill
a heard of elephants :( The even sadder part is they don't help a
whole lot with the pain, but do allow me to sleep which in the end
helps to rid me of the migraines that persist. One before last lasted
26 days.
So, how painful is it and how long will the pain last? What am I going
to do if the pain is greater than the meds? I'm sure people without a
tolerance to narcotics would be better off, but this isn't my case.
Not to mention I would rather avoid all pain meds until I absolutely
need them as to not have any more tolerance than needed so when I do
use them they are effective. Can they just prescribe you something so
you can sleep for 72 hours without using narcotics? Then take up using
pain medicine? Sorry, but I'm not a doctor and need an experts advice.
Sorry my questions aren't more intellegent...picture a guy getting
kicked in the head for several years by a 1200lb dairy cow :)

Sounds to me that you need an oral surgeon to remove the wisdom teeth,
really doubt an orthodontist is going to want to move them into place. Most
folks these days don't have "room" for the wisdom teeth (that's why they
tilt outward).
If you do decide to have them removed, please tell your dentist/oral
surgeon the vicodin/migrain story, it will make both your lives easier.
Pain shouldn't be too bad, not like a knee scope. Other things will effect
your pain, smoking, medical conditions, medications. Ask your doctor about
things to do to help lessen the pain.
Shouldn't be a bad experience.
Good luck!!

Doc,
Pardon my ignorance. I am seeing an oral surgeon one week from today.
I couldn't remember what you called them :)
No offense, but I never have liked going to the dentist. And after
having had surgery two times in the past (knees scoped, biopsy) I've
never been warm to the idea of "going under the knife" :(
I'm really, really nervous. Writing this doesn't make me feel very
secure either. Just thinking about it makes me want to crawl under a
rock. I'm sure I have nothing to fear, but I can't shake this feeling.
Do dentists fear going to the dentist/oral-surgeon? What do you do to
calm your nerves?

I'm concerned that I might be addicted to narcotics. As mentioned
above I take, on average, sixty "vicodin 10"'s a year. I've tried to
start a dialogue with my gp and she just shrugged it off. Sometimes I
find myself in only modest pain, but wanting to reach for the vicodin
anyway. In that case I break them in half, but it leaves me feeling
like I'm addicted or a junkie. So, I would guess that I actually take
closer to ninety or a hundred doses of vicodin a year, but sometimes it
is a whole pill and others a half pill.
Anyone knows what to do? I honestly don't think going to a treatment
center for drug addicts is going to improve my addicition if I'm indeed
addicted. No sooner I'd get cured from narcotic addiction than I would
have a migraine. What the hell would I do then?

If you are getting migrane headaches, perhaps an NTI would
help.

RE: upper outward tilting teeth: _most_ patients have mild to
low-moderate pain, easily contained. Try to get them out by an oral
surgeon or at least a generalist who has alot of experience doing
whizzies. Try to get them out early in the morning. The peak of pain is
therefore attained before you sleep for the night. It is easier to
contain when you can take your meds on schedule, and put ice pressure on
your cheeks. This is why I suggest you get them out early in the
morning.
RE: migraines: You must look into the NTI-tss stress reducing bite
block. This stands a good chance of reducing your pain by much. You can
find a description and track down a dentist in your area that inserts
them here:

I wear an NTI, as do many dentists here, and they help in ways that you
wouldn't really expect. You really have nothing (apart from some cash
outlay) to lose.
