Help- my 11 year old has 7 new cavities in the past 6 months!!! I
first took him to the dentist at 3, because I could actually see
cavities. It's the same every check up. I've taken him to two
pediatric dentists and asked his doctor about it. His father had
dentures by 18 years old-I asked if he inherited some sort of dental
problem. I used steroid inhalers for asthma while I was pregnent with
him-I asked if it weakened his teeth. He never drank a bottle, drank
juice from a cup and now that he's older we have never had soda in our
house. He uses a sonic toothbrush, but is not the best flosser. I've
been told by all the professionals that he needs to brush better. I
know there's more to it than that, I know he eats well and brushes
well, better than his siblings whose teeth are not that bad. Any
thoughts would be greatly appreciated, hopefully before he loses all
his teeth.

There are in fact inherited conditions that can lead to decay and tooth
loss, but these are relatively rare. You can google for amelogenesis
imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta.
A girl in my daughter's school and her mother both have dentinogenesis
imperfecta. Mom still has teeth, but they've been all crowned.
Daughter is headed down the same path.
I have heard of steroid inhalers being associated with caries, but only
the person using it--not the children of these people.
Certainly the pediatric dentist should be investigating this from all
angles--heredity, diet, oral hygiene--and should be able to help you far
more than we can here.
Good luck,
Steve

1. Soft teeth.
2. Bad habits such as Gummy Bears.
3. Too much Pepsi.
Any number of reasons ....
OK I read your message, its most likely some bad candy habits after school.

Yup, amazing how many people just stare
when you give them the new toothbrush at their recall visit!
