Hello all,

Thanks for your responses a few months ago about looking for a career in
dentistry as a change from computing work.

I've applied for a few assisting jobs but so far they've always been grabbed
by people who have more experience. I realise that they are always hotly
contested.

I did write to one university but I heard nothing at all back from them, I
would suppose that I could try others but I am not sure what luck I will
have.

I live in south west England. Is there anything that anybody knows of maybe
even voluntary that I could do at evenings or weekends that might help me
move into dentistry - to be taken seriously?

Thanks, Mark.

I think if you can find a dentist who is on the National Health program,
s/he'd be only too happy to have you on as an extra pair of hands for
awhile. You could do volunteer work a few hours a week and you would
really see if you like that kind of work.

You could also try your hand at the laboratroy end of the profession and
see if you would like that

Hope this helps

Mark, where exactly are you located?  What hospital/s are you near?

I'm located in Exeter, so we have a large(ish) hospital here with one of
those NHS clinics.

All of the assisting jobs I've seen there involve having done some kind of
degree though - so I'm out.

The nearest dental school / hospital is in Bristol though - too expensive to
get to, just to volunteer.

Mark.
