I guess DentalCom is vulnerable too.
If someone disables this site, there
will be five people with nothing to do!

Two accused of disabling competing Web sites and others
JEFFREY GOLD
Associated Press
NEWARK, N.J. - Computer attacks orchestrated by a Michigan man to
cripple Web sites operated by competitors to his online sportswear
business were deployed by a New Jersey teen, federal and state
authorities charged as the two were arrested Friday.
The damage reverberated beyond the targets, eventually causing $1.2
million to $2 million in damage to about 100 Web sites, said John
Hagerty, a spokesman for the state Division of Criminal Justice.
FBI Special Agent Tim Nestor put the cost even higher, at $2.5
million, calculated on lost business and well as the cost to repair
computers.
"It was a fairly large attack," said Nestor, supervisor of the FBI
cybercrime squad in New Jersey, adding that on one day over the summer
it knocked out a "backbone provider" of Internet service in eastern
Pennsylvania for 12 hours.
"This was a malicious attack that had widespread practical and
financial consequences. The damage literally rolled across the country
and beyond," Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said in a
statement.
Jason Saleh Arabo, 18, of Southfield, Mich., was arrested by FBI
agents in Detroit and charged with conspiring to transmit a program to
damage a computer, federal prosecutors said.
A 17-year-old boy in Edison, Middlesex County, was arrested by New
Jersey State Police and charged with one count of computer theft by
denial of service, Lt. Kevin Rehmann said. The teen, whose name was
not released because of his age, was held at the Middlesex County
juvenile detention center.
Authorities did not immediately know who they had retained as lawyers.
Arabo was released on $50,000 bond. A message seeking comment left at
his home was not immediately returned.
The pair met online June in a chat room "where computer-savvy people
can communicate with each other," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric H. Jaso
said.
Arabo operated two companies that sold sports clothing,
www.customleader.com and www.jerseydomain.com, from his home. He
recruited the teen to conduct the attacks in return for some of the
historic uniform reproductions he sold, along with high-end sneakers
and a watch, Jaso said.
In July, the teen launched "distributed denial of service" attacks
aimed at computer servers supporting the Web sites of his competitors,
including a New Jersey company, according to a complaint filed by the
FBI.
This was accomplished by secretly infecting thousands of computers
with copies of a program known as a "bot," short for robot. The teen
then ordered the bots to access the targeted Web site at the same
time, overloading the site's server and causing it to crash, the
complaint said.
Authorities seized Arabo's home computer in January, Jaso said.
The New Jersey company, identified in the FBI complaint only as "JJ,"
notified the FBI on July 7 that its Web site had been attacked five
days earlier, leaving it unable to do business. The attacks continued
into December. "Whenever these attacks occurred, JJ was unable to
conduct normal business via its e-commerce site. As a result, JJ's
volume of business declined dramatically, causing significant
financial losses," the complaint said.
The attacks "were so severe that they affected service to other
customers of the Web hosting company" used by JJ, causing those
customers to dump the hosting company, the complaint said, adding, "As
a result, the Web hosting company refused to continue to provide
services to JJ."
JJ is www.jersey-joe.com, according to two officials.
Phone and e-mail messages seeking comment from jersey-joe.com, based
in Delran, Burlington County, were not immediately returned Friday.
The charge against Arabo carries up to five years in prison and a fine
of up to twice the loss to victims. The charge against the teen could
carry prison time, depending on how the case is prosecuted.

Farran was wise enough to realize that pumping out 150,000 copies of
DentalTown Magazine every month, with most of the content being edited
versions of the discussion boards, brings in the 20-30 new people to
replace the ones that dropped out!
His advertising revenues covers printing costs. As long as the
advertisers do not realize he is cookin' the "online roster," then he
is good to go. Kudos to Howard! It is original and useful.

No, it sort of developed organically. It was meant to be an
alternative to existing sites. May as well admit that I was barred
from Beyond Fear for some posts about the positive power of negative
thinking, which didn't go down too well (understatement) . It sort of
developed from there...

thanks Sue, some more comments below.

That's a huge problem.... if all else fails, you can always put up
your own board .

No, it sort of developed organically. It was meant to be an
alternative to existing sites. May as well admit that I was barred
from Beyond Fear for some posts about the positive power of negative
thinking, which didn't go down too well (understatement) . It sort of
developed from there... the forum has been up for roughly 4 months,
it's not very busy, but busy compared to similar boards. The
contributions tend to be high quality, though, and quite frankly, we
wouldn't be able to cope if there were a lot more posts.
What strikes me about the current set-up here is that the main
protagonists all seem to have different agendas, e.g. some enjoy a
good fight, others prefer friendly gossip, some are interested in
access to healthcare issues, others delight in denouncing "socialized"
health care systems, etc. The best thing might be to find a common
denominator and work from there. "No censorship" isn't really enough
to keep a forum going. If you want a dentistry forum, make it a
dentistry forum. If you want an access to healthcare forum, make it
one. Having a forum dedicated to bad-mouthing might be fun, but there
are potential libel issues involved.
If all else fails, you can always go it alone.

Amber,
I agree with what you are saying. There has never been a vision except
to keep this site uncensored.
I believe if Justin keeps this site up, it will likely become a place
to play arcade games unless we make a concerted effort to make this
more than a chat site for Sue, Joel and occasionally Shad. Flap used
to visit but now he cannot. This is not enough to attract people or
sustain much conversation...
We need to have people devoted to creating a vision, and then planning
ways to make that happen. I am not sure if anyone has the desire to
put in the work to do that.
Thank you for your input. Do you have any kind of vision statment or
mission staement that you have created on paper? We have no prior
experience in this. How long have you been running? What steps did you
take. Did you create your vision first... or as you went along.
We have the architecture started and we have advertised...
Thanks so much. We would appreciate ANY more input you can give us.
Thank you,
Sue

I agree with Shad. Howard should have called or e-mailed Shad before
putting the piece in print. The magazines goes out to 150,000 people,
while the messages are read by 200 people, tops. In fact, if its a hot
topic, the message gets buried very very fast because of other
responses.
My proof? Some people say at DentalTown, "Hey! Whatever happened to
the clown fish guy ....? I just noticed I haven't heard from him for
three months or so ...... "
Thar's proof of how out of it dentists are.
Every morning Howard gets busy and logs in lots of people who have no
idea that Howard is using their sign-in profile to log them in. This
is not idle gossip. I have proof of this right here on my own
computer.

It seems to me, after several months' absence from this site, that not
much has changed. I see the same names -- the original malcontents --

For me, "everything I needed to know about dentistry I learned on
DentalTown", to bastardize a familiar quote. I appreciate spirited
banter, but not argument for the sake of argument, which is what most
of you seemed to enjoy on DT, thus you retreated to dentalcom.net. If
this site folds, for whatever reason, and you all wander back to DT,
you'll be just as unhappy now and just as unwelcome by some, I would
imagine.
So, if nobody's posting and you can't figure out why, maybe you should
reflect on why this site was started and realize that (fortunately)
there just aren't that many disgruntled dentists who have nothing
better to do than ***** and moan about why everybody else is wrong.
Most of us are busy doing dentistry, and can find what we want -- in a
helpful and usually courteous manner -- on DT, without all the
conflict.
I'm not trying to be a smartass here, just trying to answer your
question about why people don't post. You just don't offer anything
that most people want ... confrontation and conflict for no particular
reason.
Hey Noogie. I read your response and really thought about it. I am
sorry you did not get the repsonse you had hoped for. Next time I will
make sure I come and give you a big hug.
Try getting flamed with a blow torch, called a moron, ridiculed as
being annoying, have everyone ridiculing you behind your back... have
an initiation like Flap and Joel had on DT... a contest about who is
the most annoying poster and try to hang in there.

Why would he print anything that reflects poorly on the

Was he trying to help Shad?
or
Was it just a vindicitve action on Howard's part.

Justin is a Townie. Justin also started this site.
Justin and Shad mentioned this site on DT, and Howard Farran told
Justin and Shad to take a hike and never come back.
Then Howard deleted all evidence of that thread.
Then Howard apologized to Justin, but instead of apologizing to Shad
he demeaned Shad in a Dentaltown magazine. Thank God Shad is a
strong-willed person and can handle crap like that. Somebody else
would have left DT for good.
So why was he nice to Justin but not to Shad?
What do you think Amber?
Is it because he likes Justin but doesn't like Shad or what?

down the law. It seems as if this is not the case here, where the
admin (Justin) appears to be someone who provides the facilities on

get it
Amber,
Flap and Justin created this site (Justin's the tech guy...flap is the
dentist) because Howard Farran decided to delete and censor a bunch of
stuff on Dentaltown. Then shortly after Dcom was formed, Justin and
Flap had a disagreement and broke up their partnership. Justin
continued as the sole Admin.
I don't think anybody ever really decided just what to do... so we
just started talking on the boards.
Joel, Bill and Justin came up with some ideas for using RSS feed .. I
am not sure how that was all thought up... maybe one of them can
explain.
Joel recruited LOTS.... He got quite a number of people to visit. But
nobody ever stayed for too long.
We need more dentists. I have no dental expertise to offer. I am just
a filler until they get more dentists. But everybody prefers DT. Most
DTers don't want to be associated with this site at all.
Why.
Because initially there were quite a number of negative posts about DT
here (mostly anonymous)... so a big ruckus started.
Then one of the moderators on DT started a thread called
F%$# Dentalcom.net...later changed it to Forget Dentalcom.net.
There they made fun of everybody over here.. what a bunch of losers we
are. Oddly though, Justin was treated well.
Flap thinks Justin is treated well because Howard wants to make sure
that he can control Justin.
What do you think?
I think that is silly.

Thats a good idea too. I never liked the forum topics and I still dont
today. That was the one piece of work that I did not contribute to
this site. Me being a computer type person would have a hard time
coming up with good topics.
Plus, since people have already posted in a topic that may end up
being removed, I would have to do something with those posts, somehow.
I bet its easier then I think it is.
If you guys have any ideas let me know. I am all for changing some
things up.

I agree. Thats why I consider taking it down. If leaving it up for the
minority makes people happy, then thats what should be done, unless a
massive majority would like to use it for the arcades, which can be
done anyways.
Sue, thank you for the thought of reimbursing me. Hold that thought,
if money ever gets tight that will be nice. The site is fairly
inexpensive so hopefully that will never happen.

Justin,
I did not mind the news bits at all. In fact I liked them. I read
almost every single one. (At least skimmed them). I was learning a lot
from them. It was nice to see so much press on what dentists and
organizations are doing across the country to increase dental access.
There were quite a few articles on that.
I know a couple others thought they made it difficult to see "Today's
posts."
But I didn't find that to be the case myself.
I also like seeing Joel's repsonses. As a speed reader he summed
everything up tidy and sometimes I would not even need to read the
article.
What do others think about the RSSbot?

Justin,
I would like to reimburse some costs. I don't think it is fair that
you have paid for this. I hope others will pitch in too, especially
now that you are engaged (I think?)
I am not sure if Joel even knows, but aren't you and Jenn engaged? I
wanted to congratulate you but I was not sure. If it is
true...CONGRATULATIONS!
There is more I want to say, but I am having difficulty collecting my
thoughts and finding my words. I will write again.
Later then,
Sue

Depressed?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more I think about it the more I want to keep it up. I have been
wondering about this for the past month or so and I dont think I can
actually take it down. Its like creating a robot, and then having to
destroy him. I just cant do it. The cost/profit of the site doesnt
really mean a lot to me.
Its just odd. The number of posts are going down, but we still have a
lot of people lurking. I cannot decide if I should make people
register or not.
My girlfriend would get mad at me anyways, she loves to compete in
pacman.
How have you guys been doing?
Maybe I could create a domain called DentalArcade.com, and then link
it to dentalcom.net....
I think I will do that, but how do I tell people about
dentalarcade.com? If I told anyone on DT they would accuse me of
promoting dentalcom. The counterstrike idea of DT would work better if
they included counterstrike source.

Hello Justin,
Yes this is very understandable and we support any decision you make.
We have learned a great deal from this site and that alone has made
all the effort worthwhile. We do hope that you will profit from
whatever we had going on here. If there are some other ideas that
interest you or that may be helpful to you, we should discuss that.
As post-mortem, I believe that DentalTown's success has been the
support from the print magazine, and the fact that Howard has the
marketing people aligned with DentalTown. That in and of itself proves
useful.
Do you have any interest in the victimID proposal?
Search under "ANN RULE."
If so, various profiles could be aggregated here, with the possibility
of gaining some income from advertising banner activity.
More later,
Your "faithful poster,"
Joel

Perhaps the fact that they dont have to register, keeps them from
posting. After all, you do have to register to post....

Taking DentalCom Down
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am thinking of taking Dentalcom down. I havent yet, because I like
the arcade and I like you guys being able to post here. If we dont get
more posts, then I may convert this site into maybe an arcade only
site, or I may just leave it the way it is.
It would be hard for me to take this board down, but I just might. I
removed the news feeds because I feel like its keeping people from
posting. If you guys have any ideas let me know. One thing I do not
want to do is to remove all of the posts. I am curious as to how we
can get people to post instead of lurking. I think If I was going to
take this site down, I would have already done it by now.

Visits is the main category of interest...

The original contains valuable information. When you repost, we have
already seen the original.
