Can a crown that's too low cause these problems?

I recently visited a new (to me) but highly recommended and reputable
dentist because I was experiencing severe headaches and jaw pain.
Previously I'd seen an GP and ENT because we thought it was a sinus
issue - head CT showed nothing except some thick mucus in my right
maxillary sinus.  Dentist took x-rays and found nothing but upon
further exam. saw a very slight crack in #30, and said the reason for
crack was the stress of the old mercury filling and that he suspected
TMJ (this fits w/my husband's complaints about my popping jaw, which I
do not notice, and I do know I grind my teeth, but with 3 kids under 5
the stress is gonna come out somewhere, right? : )

DDS suggested a crown on #30 (my first crown!) and in process of
prepping the tooth he said there would be no need for buildup (saved me
$ so I was glad at the time).  Well, it's a beautiful porcelain thing
but after 2 weeks was still tender and that side of my mouth seemed
"off" so I went back in and had his assistant polish just a tip of the
inside corner off, thinking that it was pushing up against a tooth
above it and that was causing the pain.  She did a bite test on me and
said there looked to be no problem, that the crown was not even showing
up on the paper.  She humored me and did a little work anyway.  No
immediate relief but it did feel slightly better after the nerve calmed
down after all that high speed polishing.

It's now 1.5 months post-crown and the right side of my mouth has a
nearly unbearable low-grade ache that is , strangely, no coming from
#30.  I'm taking 800 mgs of advil 2x day and it's helping a bit.

I think my bite is still off.  When I close my mouth on that side it
feels as though the new crown is too low and the teeth nearer the front
of my mouth (don't know the #'s but my eye teeth hurt on top and bottom
and also those next to eye teeth on top and bottom.

What to do?  Should I even go back?  Is there a way to test my bite at
home?  Could this just be the TMJ acting up again?  Would clenching my
teeth throughout the day cause this kind of pain?  Find a better
dentist?  ACK!

This is horrible.  I appreciate any and all input on my situation, and
hope I've explained well enough to ensure understanding.

thanks

Sounds too good to be true, but Dr. Steve is right on the money
with this one.  You probably cracked the tooth with night time
clenching (if it was really cracked in the first place).  A few
injections, an hour or so of opening wide, the bite changed ever
so slightly, and you are now in pain.

Get an NTI and you should get relief quickly.

Get it checked by the dentist.

Wow.  That NTI site is one of the most graphically busy, confusing and
barely navigable sites I've ever encountered BUT the apparatus itself
sounds like a godsend.

Is this what my dds is referring to when he says we need to custom fit
for a night guard to deal w/my TMJ symptoms??

thanks for the replies, btw.

oh, and I wanted to add:  I haven't had a headache in months.  Only jaw
joint paint and cheek pain.  I assume this wouldn't change need for the
NTI (lack of headache)??

No.

TMJ symptoms go away pretty fast IME.

Probably not.  You need to look at the list of providers on the website
to find someone that understands the device.

BTW, nothing else works as well (no matter how much it costs).

I doubt it very much.  A conventional night-guard will protect your teeth
from damage, but could make TMD and headache problems worse.  Plus, the
conventional appliance requires two appointments to deliver and a bunch more
to adjust it.

Probably not. If your doc was doing NTI's he would probably

You could try upgrading your eraser.  Maybe add more turns to your pencil

The analogy I like is going to the grocery store and not being able to
buy certain frozen foods as your current freezer would not be able to
keep them cold ......

Yet we accept this in the computer world!

I think it is more like not being able to buy certain types of fire-wood
because your fireplace only accepts Birch-wood.

Actually, wrt the miniMac, I wouldn't be surprised if you _could_ get it
there. Jobs is aiming it at _any_ computer configuration now in
existance. You just add a couple of wires and presto, you have an OS X
Mac coming through your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse. So, now
you can have your Windoze box, your Crapintosh, your cake and your
Bailey's Irish creme and eat and drink it too.

Speaking of which, Happy St. Pat's Day!

Wassail!
