ok what do u dental people think about this:

i had a tooth filled that was almost ready for a root canal..it was
close to reaching the root so i opted for a filling since it could be
done and was in no pain. side note:lots of hay fever dust alleries so
i'm constantly dealing w/ sinus issues. anyho noticed small bump  on
upper gum where it meets the top near the nasal area. it has since gone
away (no pain just tenderness near sinus area and bump area)..and
occasionally becomes irritated...but no tooth pain at all!?! should i
be worried. have an appt to get my wisdom teeth consultation visit to
remove 3 wisdom teeth (guess i am not wise enogh for 4). could an upper
impacted wisdom tooth be attributing to this (it's on the same
side)..or will i have to face the inevitable - root canal *YUK*
The Real Paul - 28 Feb 2005 17:57 GMT
As far as the bump goes - Is it white when present? Like a pimple? Above the
tooth that had the deep filling?

If yes to these questions then the tooth is abscessed and need a  root
canal. The tooth doesn't hurt because the infection is draining out of the
bump.

nuts.  yea i did see  a white bump but it went away..has shown up since
on occasion. i had a sinus infection and it was at time the bump showed
up she said not to worry about it !! course she is obviously no
dentist. she gave me antibiotic for the sinus, the bump went away but
still shows up in much smaller scale. think i  can talk my surgeon
removing my wisdom teeth to perform a root canal at the same time ;)

how long can i wait to get the root canal done?

That sounds exactly like the abcess I had although mine wasn't always white.
Mine would come and go every time I had a beer! Quite painless but that was
probably because my tooth already had a root job. Best book an apointment to
get it looked at before it turns into an emergency.
adk_grl - 28 Feb 2005 19:27 GMT
did u have to get another root canal, or did u switch to hard liquor?

Joel
adk_grl - 28 Feb 2005 21:23 GMT
bicuspid i believe ..upper right side
2mo to 12 years??!!
so no need to freak out?  right now the bump is gone and all is
smooth....tho i haven't had any beer lately :P

Best thing is an x-ray. If there is a radiolucency, then it requires
REQUIRES root canal therapy. Fortunately the second bicuspid is a
decent tooth and the prognosis is good.

If its a first bicuspid then all bets are off. This is due to the root
structure.

What about Peppermint Schnapps? How does that affect your tooth?

Before you spend $ on optional, think about that little tooth that is
going to SHOW if it gets yanked!

ok so how long does it take the abcess to heal itself..just finished
antibiotic and there is still a smaller but  often present pimple!...my
next appt is next wednesday ...

If this is post root canal therapy, it will vary. Sometimes it heals
in weeks and other times it require surgical intervention, known as
apicoectomy, to completely remove it.

IF it is before RCT, the antibiotic will only make it smaller, never get rid
of it.

True, we agree.
adk_grl - 09 Mar 2005 14:36 GMT
it is the first phase of the root canal therapy..."draining" period
where he made a small hole in my tooth.
the area is much less sensitive than before, however is still notice
the pimple. my endodontist told me i had to wait 2 weeks until he does
the 2nd phase...so i still have another week to go before i see him. i
just ended the antibiotic so i guess i was thinking the pimple would
have been conquered by my antibodies by now. been doing the salt water
rinses religiously.
Dr Steve - 09 Mar 2005 15:17 GMT
You need the RCT because the tissues inside the tooth are dead (or dying).
Dead tissue has NO blood flow.  No blood flow means there is no way to get
any antibiotic inside the tooth.  The antibiotic can only help in the bone
around the tooth, but more gangrenous products are constantly leaching out
of the tooth.

huh>? i did have the first phase of the root canal treatment last week.
i go back next week for the 2nd phase.
adk_grl - 09 Mar 2005 18:56 GMT
hmm endodontist just prescribed me another week of antibiotics since
there is still a 'pimple' and going in a week to finish the root canal

>hmm endodontist just prescribed me another week of antibiotics since

Your Endodontist wants to be certain you do not call at 3:00 a.m. with
swelling Research says the "pimple" will never go away completely
until the inside of the tooth is cleaned out.

Your description would suggest that the Endodontist only "buzzed" a hole
into the tooth to relieve pressure and pain.  Nothing in your post suggests
that the dead tissue was thoroughly cleaned out of the tooth.  BTW, if the
POI starts listing about 350 URL's telling you how some guy in 1923
discovered that RCT was bad for you, make your decision based on current
science.

adk_grl - 10 Mar 2005 02:46 GMT
i'm all about the science of it. yea he made a hole in the tooth and
showed me in an xray where he went up into the root. he explained it
would take two phases..i think the first was to get most of the
infection to drain..the second phase next week is more lengthy  he
explained..he is highly recommended endodontist ..i just have never had
a root canal so i'm still not sure what to expect through all this.. i
thought the pimple would have gone away..but as u are suggesting he
hasn't done the fully cleaning yet. .

Two stage endodontics is an older, still acceptable technique,
particularly in the presence of exudate (stuff coming out of the jaw).
