Self-limiting damage by beef jerky?

Achy Molars-Sinuses - 22 Feb 2005 12:12 GMT No, I'm not trying to be silly. I had root canal treatment on my first and second upper molars about eight months ago. They're nicely dead now. Most of the time anyway. Sometimes these two molars and the wisdom tooth behind them become exquisitely tender, and this usually happens a few hours *after* I've eaten beef jerky, i.e. quite tough, chewy food. It only happens on the side where I had the root canal treatment, the other side of my jaw copes with the strain of eating this food just fine. The pain is worst when chewing pressure is applied to the affected teeth and it subsides without medication in a day or two.
Is there something going wrong at the, for want of a better word "interface" between the teeth and the bone? Does it simply mean I should go easier on tough, chewy foods or is it likely that there is some sort of clinical problem?
The Real Paul - 22 Feb 2005 13:23 GMT You had the root canals done, but did you have the teeth crowned (capped)? I hope so because if not then you are going to crack a tooth in half and then it will need to be extracted. Back teeth need this protection due to the forces involved in crushing and grinding of food back there and the fact that the tooth is severely weakened after being hollowed out with the root canal treatment.

You risk fracture if you haven't. --

I suggest a switch to the softer, gummable, greazy Slim Jim sticks instead.

Gail Michael - 25 Feb 2005 13:16 GMT Can't resist, although no better than you or anyone. Crown or no crown, if we are what we eat, you are a jerk. Beef jerkeys look like they are for animals just by sight. Switch to salami, baloney, corned beef, etc. And we may also be what we drink. Walking around with a can of soda pop constantly, is a good advertisement for coke, pepsi, and does not in good faith, advertise the need for a dentist. Included in the mix are chocolate, so who can talk. Right or wrong, Good teeth throughout life indicate maturity. So we can almost say, what we eat or drink is a matter of emotional health? As SP would say, will get off the soapbox now, as it is very slippery.

W_B may think this is an advertisement for Shofar or Hebrew National.

Joel M. Eichen - 03 Apr 2005 23:13 GMT Are you implying that beef jerky is loaded with mercury?
I do not get it.
