When I had my teeth worked on the other day the dentist used something new
(to me) called "septicane". He didn't do any blocks and just used this
stuff. Boy did it make it numb, and the numbness finally went away hours
later... but I have a pain (now 36 hours later) in my gums in the lower
front. Actually the pain seems to be getting worse. My dentist is out of
town this weekend. At first I thought it was a side effect from this
septicane stuff, but if it is getting worse could that indicate an infection
or something? I've got some amoxicillin laying around, wonder if I should do
some of those in case.

I think "septo" is a really bad name for an anesthetic. At this point I
don't know what is going on but it is 2 AM and I can't sleep because of the
pain. I don't know if I have an infection or all this "septo" has killed my
gums.. feels like I was hit with a baseball bat in the chin. I'm reading
some bad things about this sept-o-stuff

The pain is still there, a little worse than last night. Deep down my gums
have a peculiar "stiff" feeling. GOD I HOPE this isn't permanent.

Rich, I just wanted to share with you that when I got my teeth out for
dentures I had problems like this pain for a few months though it started to
ease off at times. My surgeon said that he had probably irritated a few
nerves with the shots and the pulling and that it would stop hurting. I
don't remember exactly how long it took to stop the serious pain but it did
go away. I can't take otc pain relievers for pain so I was on Vicodan's
during the healing time for about a month I believe it was. Hope this helps
a little and that it's easing up for you. UM MOM Susan

Most of the links talk about nerve damage, like loss of taste and stuff like
that. This feels more like a canker sore from hell, deep under the skin. it
feels like what one would expect if hit upside the head with a nine iron.

Sounds like an abscess. Most recent studies show NO higher incidence
of problems when using Septocaine than with ANY other anesthetic.

It has been almost 2 weeks since this problem arose -- how are things today?
I would think that you're much better by now. In your original posting, you
didn't mention what dental treatment you had done, and it's possible that
the problem came from the teeth rather than from the local anesthetic. That
being said, most problems like this resolve by themselves over time, and I'd
be reluctant to have someone jump in and do something when "tincture of
time" will take care of the problem.
