Decay under veneers?

How often do you guys see decay under porcelain veneers? I'm supposed to be
fitted with 18 veneers next week.. so I'd like to know. The dentist who's
doing it says he hasn't seen many decays under the veneers in all his 20
years and his veneers are glued on and cured with a laser so decays
shouldn't happen. Sound good?

Thanks.

I don't see a lot of decay under veneers.  But this is probably because
I won't place them in patients with a lot of active decay, and monitor
diet and oral hygiene.  I also have never placed 18 on one patient--most
commonly only the upper front 6 teeth.
Any tooth can decay though.  If the bonding fails (and this does
occasionally happen), you can get percolation of oral fluids and decay
under a veneer.  More frequently in my older patients, I see gum
recession and decay at the gingival edge of the veneer.  These can
usually be repaired, but care must be taken by the dentist not to
fracture the veneer when repairing these cavities.

Rich, I wish I could get a few of those veneers. Good Luck, MC

Thanks. I'm uncomfortable about spending money on my teeth. Its such a
selfish thing.. I just wish I was born with straight normal colored teeth,
but so do a lot of people I guess. Rich

I'm not deep into cosmetic make overs, but I don't see where fixing
your smile is terribly selfish.  Many people spend lots of money on
lavish homes, furnishings, clothes, jewelry, cars, etc. (not to mention
alcohol, tobacco, gambling...).  Unless you're St. Teresa, knock
yourself out!

It's very possible that a more attractive smile will have benefits
that you might not imagine.

Sounds reasonable.
