A fixed retainer is in the mouth all the time, so it is more likely to be
used. It can also be made smaller than a removable one.
If it hurts after wearing your retainer, the teeth are trying to shift. You
need to wear the retainer more and get to your orthodontist to have it
re-evaluated. Your occlusion (how your teeth meet) may need some minor
adjustment. Also, you probably need to be evaluated for night-time
clenching and grinding habits.
