My dentist told me that I need 2 crowns on my teeth in back. They don't hurt, but he says it is preventive because I have fillings in them and they are wearing down. If I don't crown them then I will end up with a root canal. Does this make sense? What is the average price of a crown? Thanks

Some of it makes sense while other parts do not.  There is always a good
chance you mis-interpreted him.

Teeth with very large fillings are better off (in the long-run) with a crown
(or as I prefer, an onlay).  For the short term, it often does not matter.
If the fillings are beginning to break down, then often a crown or onlay is
the procedure of choice.

Will ignoring this lead to root canal therapy????????  Sometimes, but not
that often.  More often, ignoring this type of condition leads to the tooth
breaking off while you are on vacation and 2000 miles from home.  Then,
looking for some Mexican dentist in Cancun to fix it for you.  If the tooth
breaks very deep into the tooth, you win the luxury of getting a root canal
treatment.  If the tooth develops a lot of decay, you win the privilege of
getting the root canal treatment.

Can we predict what will happen?????????????? Never.  No way.  Impossible.

Is the tooth more predictable with the crown or onlay,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
absolutely.

Thanks for all of your help! How much is the average crown?
Steven Fawks - 19 Jan 2005 20:11 GMT
7 to 11

(hundred dollars).

I always strive for 'above average' though.

My dentist quoted me at $1500 per crown. Is that too high?

Depends.

Where you live, the actual procedures involved, and the 'dental
marketplace' all come into play.

From where I sit, that's pretty pricey (assuming no endo or major
reconstruction beyond the crown), but I practice in the midwest.
Almost all prices on the east or west coast shock me (350 millivolts?).

That would be dirt cheap in any local of the USA for a Crown with core, post
and root canal treatment.  It would be high for anywhere outside of
California or NYC for just a single crown.  Who knows?

Average crowns are cheaper than Superior ones.
