TMJ question

I might have a strange question. I have TMJ and at times it hurts really
bad. I mean it hurts so bad I actually cry. My dentist committed suicide and
I?m currently without a dentist. I also have no insurance. I would like to
receive medication for when the TMJ pain is more than I can handle. What are
the odds that I will get something that will actually help with the pain? I
don?t want to be told to go home and take Advil or some OTC stuff. I don?t
have insurance and if this is what I?m going to get told, I would rather
just not go at all.

Hi Michael, I am a dentist.  I am sorry to hear about your situation.
Can you  describe the pain that you are having...is it around your
lower jaw? Does it radiate to your temples? Does it hurt more when you
open or close?  Has your jaw ever locked open or closed?  Do you clench
or grind your teeth?  How long has this been going on and is it getting
worse?  The answers to these questions should help me to help you a
little bit better.  I think it is a good idea to see a dentist..they
can refer you to a TMJ specialist, and that may be what you need.  The
best thing for muscle pain is to take ibuprofen (you can take 600mg
every 6 hours) and use moist heat.  Take a washcloth, get it wet and
put it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds..it should be very warm, but
not hot enough to burn you.  Place it on the sore area (directly on the
skin) for 15-20 minutes and then take a break of the same time period
and repeat as needed.  If your dentist thinks that this is a muscle
problem they may prescribe a muscle relaxant (flexeril or robaxacet)
and they may want to make you a splint if you are clenching or
grinding.  Please share some more info if you can and I will try and be
of more help.  Jen

It mainly hurts on the left side of my face.  Right near my ear.  I do have
pain on both sides though.  I don't grind my teeth or anything like that.
I've been having this problem for a few years now.  It has been within the
past few months that it has gotten so bad that I can't take it.  I haven't
searched for a new dentist because I don't want to get the run around.  I
don't want to be passed off and given tons of meds that don't work.  I'm
paying for all of this out of my pocket and I fear it could get very
expensive.  Basically I would like something for the pain and leave it at
that for awhile.  Though I know how the medical profession is and that is
probably the last thing they will do for me.  They will put me on 101
different things just to find out that Vicodin works the best.
Steven Fawks - 16 Jan 2005 14:33 GMT
There is no recognized specialty in "TMJ".

The fastest, most effective, least expensive relief from TMJ pain comes
from wearing an NTI.

We aren't joking (Dr.s Stove Pipe, Mancuso, W_B, Carabelli, & Fawks).

$300-$700 Depending on where you are.

That's out of my price range.  I guess I'll go to the hospital and hope for
some pills when the pain becomes more than I can handle.
Steven Fawks - 17 Jan 2005 14:11 GMT
You might want to consider the "cost" of *not* getting an NTI.

How often do you miss work?  How often is your productivity
limited by pain? How much are you spending on doctor bills and
pharmaceuticals? How often is your diet affected by what you
can chew?

I make them for a lot less than $300, but I practice in an
area where I wouldn't make very many if I charged that amount.
These people would still take up time in my office complaining
of pain, but they would get no relief.  As it is, I make a little
money, the patients feel lots better, and I look pretty good in
their eyes.  Patient loyalty isn't a bad thing to cultivate.

No problem.  I've had a vascectomy.

Same vet that neuters your hogs? - better check.

Back on the farm, we 'cut hogs'.  Didn't never hear of some
fancy word like nuter.  Mountain oysters are pretty good (if
you forget where they came from).

$300 - 700 is alot less than the cost of a liver transplant.
