Can invisalign aligners be used for bleaching?

I got a free bleaching kit with my invilalign treatment and was wondering
if I can use my aligner instead of the trays that came with the bleaching
kit.

Thanks.

The bleaching trays are made to cover the entire enamel surfaces of the
teeth. The aligners are usually made to cover only a portion of the
teeth, so bleach used in the aligners would whiten only that part of
the teeth.

Using the aligners as bleach trays might result in an interesting
two-tone pattern on the enamel.  ;-)

My aligners cover all coronal surfaces.

If all supragingival surfaces fully covered, as they are with the
flexible bleaching trays, then use of the aligners for whitening might
be a possibility.

What form do your aligners take in places with severe undercuts? When I
took the Invisalign intro seminar, severely-tilted teeth were not fully
covered all the way to the gingival margin in those cases where the
path of insertion would not permit it. This was no problem from an
orthodontic standpoint, but would limit the amount of bleach that tooth
would receive if the aligner were used as a bleaching tray.

Most flexible bleaching trays extend 0.5 - 1.0 mm onto the gigiva. This
ensures full bleaching power without undue exposure of the gingivae to
the peroxide. Do the aligners cover as much, or do they end right at
the gingival margin?

I don't know what the effect of 20% or stronger carbamide peroxide
would be on the aligner material. It shouldn't be a problem, but you
never know unless it has been studied.

I hadn't thought of severely tilted teeth--I had tilted teeth, but they
managed to cover the entire coronal surface.  They end pretty much at
the gingival margin.
I haven't used bleaches over 15%, but remember the aligners only have
to hold up for 2 weeks. ;-)
I am wearing the heavier guage retainers now, and they're slowly
disintegrating.  I used a calculus-removing solution in my ultrasonic
cleaner--don't know if that was the problem, but it started chipping
after that.  They have lasted the better part of a year, though.

Pray tell, do you need a NTI??

*If*, the invisilign *retainers* are *not* contructed to overcorrect
previous rotations, maybe the will work.  An active aligner will be applying
pressure opposite the direction of anticipated movement - thus tight contact
where pressure is applied and a distorted no contact for anticipated
movement.  In my mind that would be the equivalent of a bleaching solution
resevoir.

I have not treated a case with invisilign but have taken their course.

I would wait till the end to use the aligner or suck down retainer in
replacement of bleach tray.
To the previous comment if you place the gel in an active aligner there
may not be any space for the gel next to the tooth as well.
So only use the aligner that has been worn for 2-3 weeks for bleaching
or wait for the retainer and do it at the end.
Most aligners cover the entire surface but sometimes the computer
overtrims and it is short.
