Hi
I am a international student studying in US. I really don't know how
these insurances, dental plans work. I want to see a dentist and I
checked online and found a few dental plans. For example I found one
called vital savings (owned by Aetna). It looks cheap. Will the quality
of service (unfortunately) be cheap, too?
Are these discount plans worth to buy? Any suggestions to have a good
treatment with a reasonable price? (I am willing to pay more for an
insurance, if I will not have any problems)
Thanks

Forgot to say.. I have already checked my university's dental school.
They are giving appointments for June! Sounds like all dental schools
are quite busy...

Generally these dental discount plans work differently than 'normal'
dental benefits. Instead of the company reimbursing the dentist a
certain percentage of the fee, the money you give is payment in full.
The company may or may not send a capitation check to your dentist
each month for having you as their patient. (hint: if you have to
register with your dentist, this they are probably getting some $$
monthly. Otherwise they are probably getting just the payment you give
them).
The problem here is you pay money to this company... and they don't
give anything (or very little) to the dentist. In return you get
lowered fees. The economic pressure on the dentist is to provide the
work as fast and using the most cost efficient materials as possible.
The actual quality of work you receive depends on the dentist that you
go to. Some have just learned to be fast and efficient. Others... are
shady. Of course, going to a dentist that doesn't accept insurance at
all doesn't guarantee that they will be excellent either.
Are you really saving money by sending your money to a third party? 15
or 20 bucks a month can add up rather quickly, and the fee for most
direct work usually isn't that high.
If you tell us what city you are in, maybe one of the members of SMD
will chime in with a good person to go to....

Thanks for the reply. I am living in Boston. Actually, it will be nice
to have a referral from here. I won't be able to choose a dentist just
by googling anyway..

There is no such thing as a dental plan you can buy as in individual which
will pay out more than you pay in.
There are discount plans which are basically like paying dues to belong.
Good luck finding a good office to participate with it.

Unless some guy's taxes are too high and he is hell bent on losing
more money than he makes .......
