Post root canal tooth sensitivity

Hello all, it's Weezie again. Back with yet another tooth concern. I
just had my root canal finished on Tuesday and capped with a temporary
crown, awaiting the permanent one which will be done in two weeks. My
question is, should that "dead" tooth still be sensitive to sweets? It
seems to hurt a little (like a cavity) whenever I eat or drink
something sweet. I told the dentist about it, and she assured me it was
ok. Her and her assistant had both assured me there was no more cavity
left. This is was second vitist for the same root canal. She had opened
it up and cleaned it out in the first visit, and put a temp filling in,
and then in the second visit she opened it up and sterilized it again.
Should I bring this sensitivity up to her again, before she puts in the
permanent crown? I just don't want to go back and retreat the root
canal, when I knew I should have piped up about it. BTW, do I get
charged twice for retreating the root canal?

Over the course of this root canal, I've had 3 x-rays, and everything's
been okey-dokey. I'll mention the temp cement to her. Thank you for
responding.

One other thing: consider the possibility that this pain is referred
from another tooth. Assuming the tooth is completely devitalized (that
is: no hidden canals with living nerve tissue in them) the only way that
this tooth could be sensitive to sugars is if the pain is being referred
by another tooth. I'd ask the dentist to take another Bite-Wing xray and
see if there is not another tooth that needs attention.

I have seen many cases in which more than one tooth needed root canal
treatment right next to eachother.  We get so caught up in worrying
about one particular tooth, we forget to check others.  The legal
system calls it a rush to judgement.

In my office, we would check the x-rays of the other teeth very
carefully, and test the other teeth with cold, pressure and electrical
stimulation.  The answer is probably not with the tooth that's already
treated.

Remember, it's very easy for me to give you advice like this without
seeing you in person.  Your dentist is your best ally in finding the
answer.

Thanks for your replies... I think I do have a cavity right next to the
root canal. It's next on the list. What I experienced this weekend,
though, was excruciating! Whenever my rc tooth touched ANYTHING, hot,
cold, sweet, protein, carbo, didn't matter, it hurt/hurts so much! But,
then, over a period of a minute or so, it subsided. It just feels like
there's a raw nerve exposed or something. Well, it hurt worse on
Saturday than it did today, so I'm hoping it will just subside and is a
result of having the root canal therapy. That, and my grandma told me
it was because I had a temp. crown on right now. I'll talk to my
dentist. Thanks again and happy new year!
