OK, I can turn this into another guitar-related post. Guitarists,
looking for the "ultimate" in sound and sustain, have been turning to
fossilized ivory from wooly mammoths, mastodon, and walrus for nuts and
bridge saddles. I have heard from a professional classical guitarist I
know that these things really work.
Of course, (non-fossilized) bone and ivory have been used in guitars
for a very long time, but of course ivory is now strictly controlled, so
using fossilized ivory is "guilt-free" since no elephants have been
killed (we presume) for the material's acquisition.
Of course, geologically speaking these are very new fossils--as you
know, mammoths have been found preserved in the ice so well that the
contents of their last meals have been examined in their stomachs. So I
assume that the actual level of non-ivory mineral varies widely.
Anyhow, it shows the lengths some folks will go to to brag.
