Yes, I had a socket graft yesterday... sinus lift is not required so I am
going with one large implant on #5 and a 12mm crown on #3. Both of these
combined will fill gap for #4 which was extracted 40 years ago. Dentist
could not fit 2 impants in this space (too small) so he decided to go with
large crown and large implant.
When I came home from the surgeon my wife said my breath smelled like cat
urine. Not quite as strong but I must admit it does smell like cat urine.
Is this the particles that he implanted, or just the after effect of the
stitching etc.
I must admit that I was sorer after the graft than I was after the
extraction.
Thanks again..looks like bridge is a moot issue now.
BTW what is the difference between an ovate and ridge lap pontic.
thanks, Ken

Two things come to mind ........
(1) How does she know ....?
(2) Is the dentist weird .......?
(I have heard weirder, but please do not ask)

I do not know about the breath some odors are normal but I do not know
about cat urine perhaps because i do not own a cat.
I do not understand the 12mm crown there is no such descriptions for
crowns.
perhaps and more likely the 12mm is the length of the implant that will
go into the socket to replace tooth #5.
Glad you do not need the sinus lift.
pontics is what we call the fake tooth on a bridge that replaces the
missing tooth. Ovate pontics are a new kind of design for a pontic in
which the bottom of it is oval and sits deep in the extraction site
mimicing the root of the fake tooth. It turns out that these pontics
are very easy to clean under with floss due to the convex surface, they
are also most natural looking. Ridge lap or modified ridge lap are the
more traditionals designs for pontic the underneath portion is concave
and these sit over the gums or ridge. They overlap over the ridge vs
ovate that sit inside the middle of the ridge. In the old days there
was a belief with bridge work you needed to have lots of space for
access so that the bridge can be cleaned easily. Problem is most
patients do not floss after eating and food stays under the bridge for
hours sometimes pinching the tissues. Ovate pontics are much closer to
natural teeth and they are surrounded by gum tissue intimately thus not
allowing a space for food to get trapped in the first place. They still
need to be cleaned but when they are cleaned there is less crap to
remove. It's a different way on thinking that led to this design.

Thank you.. very good explanation of different kinds of pontic.
