Warning on Indian herbal remedies

Half the preparations Saper studied were marketed as pediatric treatments. He
said lead contamination can impair central nervous system development, growth
and IQ. Lead poisoning can cause anemia, high blood pressure and kidney disease,
and he said mercury targets the central nervous system.

Arsenic contamination can affect skin pigmentation and cause some cancers.

But in an interview yesterday, Dr. Scott Gerson, a U.S.-trained physician and
ayurvedic practitioner in Manhattan, said ayurvedic products are harmless.
Gerson, founder of the National Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine, said updated
production practices are being instituted in India.

Saper said metals are desired in certain preparations and are said to be
eliminated through a heating process that is part of the ayurvedic practice.
Although Saper's study did not address how the contaminants got into the herbs,
he said yesterday that soil, water and/or production-line contamination were all
possibilities.

--------------------------------------------

I note that some oft he practitioners who are the beacons of light in the
holistic community are great supporters of ayurvedic therapies. I wonder if they
all agree that "metals are desired in certain preparations".

So are these metals good or bad, or is this all dependant on which answer will
benefit sales?
