Hi! I am new to this group. I joined because I need help and am not
sure what to do. When I was 16, I had braces put on to correct my cross
bite and straighten out my teeth. However, at 18 I moved out of state
and got married. I was no longer receiving any care for my teeth.

My wires began irritating the inside of my mouth, so I took them out.
Now I have brackets on all my teeth, except the wisdom teeth and metal
brackets surrounding my back molars. These are particularly troublesome
because the top of the metal encasings have peeled back from chomping
and are very sharp. I am constantly snagging my tongue on them! VERY
painful! The inside of my mouth is contantly being cut or snagged. And
my gums swell on a regular basis. I don't have bleeding, though, except
for the snagging. I brush regularly and use a little flossing brush.

I want these off so badly. The office that put these on are located in
Philadelphia... I live in Alaska! I have not visited home in 3 1/2
years. I plan to visit sometime next year, but there is no definite
date. I am not even sure if my father's insurance will still cover the
removal of these, not to mention whether the my old Orthodontist will
be willing to remove them.

So, I am faced with a delima... remove them myself somehow, or find a
doctor to do it for cheap.

Any advice???

This one is easy.  See a dentist where you are in Alaska.  I assume you
are not going to continue orthodontic treatment at this time.

Or it may be possible to catch some of the New Zealand Dental Nurses
...........

This is like the Swedish Bikini Team, only for teeth.

Advice,,,,,,??????  Sure.

Reach into your pocket and pay someone [licensed dentist] to remove
the brackets.  They will probably ask you to sign a release form.
Then, [RIGHT AWAY] get a full dental exam to see what condition your
mouth is in.

.... Could she not have them removed, and have impressions taken, and
have  a laboratory NTI made? One that wraps around the lingual of the
upper teeth like a long flipper. This would (I think) keep the dental
relation intact as it is now, acting as a retainer, and prevent other
problems, like teeth clattering all night long, from ensuing.
Just an idea, and in no way reflects the opinion of this station.

Sounds to me like this person has been ignoring their dental health
for a long time.  Time to get the brackets off and see how much damage
the patient has done with poor OH and sugar/acid habits.

OK, that's true.

No, I have not been ignoring my dental health. I brush, floss, and use
listerene (occasionally). However, I do not have the money to afford a
dentist. We do not have insurance and make too much for medicaid. I am
finally in the position to see about getting these off. I was told that
noone, but the doctor who originally put these on, would touch them.

I cannot even really pay anyone now what with checkups, eye
exams/glasses for dh and I, and other costly medical bills coming
straight out of pocket. I am still paying off a bill I incurred 3 yrs
ago for a doctor to tell me that I 'may' have the flu. Sorry this
turned into a vent, but I was not ignoring anything. But there is but
so much you can do.

Thank you for all the advice. I am going to call around to
Orthodontists in my area to see if I can get an idea of how much it is
going to cost me to have these braces removed. If anyone has any
ballpark figures, it would be very helpful.
