The older waterlase is also Er-Cr-YSSG, meaning they've changed the Xtal
that produces the laser light, meaning probably the wavelength is changed
as well. The handpiece is also equipped with fiber optics for light.

Maybe not!
I am typing from their booklet ....
Waterlase YSSG
wavelength 2780 nanometers.
The Waterlase MD?
YSSG.
wavelength 2780 nanometers.
Identical!
I cross checked the specs from both ... same. as to YSSG.
