Joel Eichen A disgrace To The Dental Profession

Is a blathering fool.

From an HONEST dentist who used to post here:

I hope most open-minded people will view Joel's attempts to characterise the
PHS report as
proving that amalgams are safe, as a gross misrepresentation of the facts.
People who rely
on professionals to know their stuff, deserve better.

Hi Judge Joel,

You are representing the most prejudicial attitude I saw in a
long time. Did you get that from being a judge during the witch-
processes in a former life, or what?

Either you are grossly misinformed or you are intentionally
spreading blatant lies.

Hans

To everyone who do not understand why Joel wants to make
a complete fool out of himself,

Wrong again !  Show me where I ever used the word "tweezers" !

If you cannot support your repeated allegations I can only
conclude you made a pretty big fool out of yourself - again !

Cheers,
Hans

Regarding top-posting,,,,,,,,,,,,, if you are keeping up with the
discussion, you can read and run.  I, for instance, will keep up with the NG
in the 2-8 minutes of free time between appointments scattered through out
the day.  If the responses are top-posted, and I have kept up with the
discussion, I can click the post, read the response without scrolling, and
keep going.  I only need to scroll down if I have forgotten part of the
preceding message.

And if you are not keeping up with the discussion it makes it much
more difficult to read and understand. Netiquette (tm) strongly
discourages top posting for that reason.

When there are dozens of different threads going on it makes it
difficult even if you are keeping up with the discussion to know what
the comment referred to.

PS: Note I also changed the subject (It was "Joel is a disgrace") in
order to more accurately describe the current discussion. With the
change in subject it would make it difficult even if you were
following the discussion if you top posted.

Nah, but I do not know what else to say about mercury fillings except
they are no good on uppers (mercury is a liquid and falls DOWN) and it
causes Break Dancing difficulties, so I am told.

When people search the archives with a particular email address, the
beginning of the post shows up as a "teaser" ... if you want people
thinking that someone else wrote the first line or two belonging to your
address, you will likely post reply at the bottom or anywhere other than
the top.

If you want the reader to see a small sample of what you had to saw
regarding the Subject line, you will post on the top.

I used to have strong feelings about this.  I no longer feel as strongly
about it.

Where anyone posts is not as important as it once was.  In fact, posting
is not as important as it once was.  Posting to usenet is becoming more
like talking to a stranger on the sidewalk in the middle of an
unfamiliar city.  No one really cares what anyone says, no one will
remember who said anything in particular, and no one knows who anyone
else is, and no one wants to be known as anyone in particular.

The Google-God is gobbling usenet history ... ever so slowly ... but
nevertheless, gobbling usenet history.  One day, there won't be any
usenet history in the archive that means anything at all.

No dentist? Get one this week!
Pronto.

I always recommend that everyone get in touch with a
friendly and helpful dentist as soon as possible. If you do
not have a dentist (45% of Americans), get an appointment and
get your teeth checked. If you can't go for the $4,000.
treatment plan, just tell the Doc in regular plain old
English, "Its not in my budget."

But get an idea about what problems might be there. If the
doctor-patient relationship is not working for you, you still
got time to hop off the train and hop onto the bus. If you
wait until you have a real dental emergency, then you are
caught. You are going to be in the train station before you
know it. You do not have enough time to check out the best
place (or way of getting there) for you.

Some more amusing thoughts about, "Getting some new
patients."

The time was the late 60s. A new patient called for an
appointment.

"Jim Garrison sent me," he said.

I thought about it for a minute. Jim Garrison? Who was Jim
Garrison? It didn't remind me of anyone I knew. Perhaps this
was a neighbor or even a referral from a nearby business
owner.

Next week, another patient with the same story.

"Jim Garrison sent me."

On and on. Over the next several weeks, there were 5 or 6
more. By this point I was just too baffled for words. Then
one day, a phone call. Another new patient.

"Your name?"

"Jim Garrison."

The day arrived. This dude came over for his dental visit.
Afterwards, I was kind of cool. I casually asked,

"Thanks for sending over so many nice referrals. By the way,
I'm curious. You've already referred me 7-8 patients and you
don't even know me. What's up?"

"Precisely," he said. "I sent my friends over and then I
asked them the important question."

"What's that?"

"How'd you like the new dentist?"

We both laughed. He remained a patient for many years. Of
course those days are gone. This was over 30 years ago, but
I can still remember seeing his face, his expression and
hearing his voice.

One day, he needed to have a wisdom tooth removed. The week
before the appointment, he said, "Now I am going to have a
chance to rate you for myself. I do not know anyone who
needs a wisdom tooth removed." It went okay.

I had another guy who was a long-standing patient who had
sent me at least 20 referrals. The only problem was that this
guy only came to the office one time every 3-4 years. When
he did come, I had a nice choice of cavities to fill. You
see, he had a large cavity in every single tooth in his
mouth.

Perhaps, I could have motivated him better, but probably not.
I was content to be his "once-in-a-while dentist" and accept
all of those nice referrals. The only thing that bothered me
was the embarrassment when he told his friends about his
"great dentist." I imagined their look of disbelief when he
flashed his beautiful smile with huge cavities in every
tooth. So it goes.

We frequently had the situation where an older practitioner
in the neighborhood retired or became ill. I'd get a call
from that office (possibly from the doctor's wife) thanking
me and apologizing for sending over so many patients! "I
know that you guys are so busy, but thanks for making some
time for our patients, too."

It was that kind of world. We did our best to help one
another. We were appreciative of those who helped us too.

Cheers,

Joel

Joel M. Eichen, D.D.S.

PS- I frequently worked 12 and 14 hour days. I had associates
who helped out so I could take some 3 or 4 day weekends. It
was a pretty fulfilling type of practice.

Thanks yeah.

Those Readers' Digest-type postings were fun.

That was back in the day ~ ~ when usenet was filled with patients with
questions, and more and more doctors who might appreciate those
stories ~ ~ the message was to get a regular dentist for your dental
care and forget the BUSINESS of DENTISTRY.

Guess what?

I lost that battle.

I don't think you ever lost that battle.  You have just been busy looking at
the bill-boards painted over the windows, rather than peaking in to see what
is going on inside.  Spend less time with Hydra and more time with patients.

The older discussions were very detailed and went on forever. That was
good. Now very few people are interested in protracted discussions

Your post should be reposted solo!  Would you do that, please?

Looks like you hit the Usnet SuperHighway when things were the Wild Wild
Web. Now it's no longer the world's best kept secret, it's a marketing
tool. Example: it seems to me that A-D said that Jim Boyd is now on
DentalTown, of all places, and so are some of the other big guns in
Dentistry.... Figures; they'll get more converts over there than here...
It is a pity that even amoung dentists; if it doesn't glitter, it's not
gold...
[/rrrrrant]

As far as UseNet history goes, maybe you should write another book about
that before the second generation of on-line'ers are too old to
appreciate the early days of internet communications.

It seems so simple when we tune in to our newsgroup, doesn't it? --
Few encounters in life are as simple as they may seem.

Your comments are appreciated, SP.
