Joel Eichen A disgrace To The Dental Profession

Jan - 06 Dec 2004 19:16 GMT Is a blathering fool.
From an HONEST dentist who used to post here:
I hope most open-minded people will view Joel's attempts to characterise the PHS report as proving that amalgams are safe, as a gross misrepresentation of the facts. People who rely on professionals to know their stuff, deserve better.
Hi Judge Joel,
You are representing the most prejudicial attitude I saw in a long time. Did you get that from being a judge during the witch- processes in a former life, or what?
Either you are grossly misinformed or you are intentionally spreading blatant lies.

Wrong again ! Show me where I ever used the word "tweezers" !
If you cannot support your repeated allegations I can only conclude you made a pretty big fool out of yourself - again !

Everything else here is Joel's attempts to make a huge smokescreen so no one will spot him in his attempts to pry his foot out of his mouth. Thats all there is

When there are dozens of different threads going on it makes it difficult even if you are keeping up with the discussion to know what the comment referred to.

The Webby - 07 Dec 2004 00:43 GMT Where anyone posts is not as important as it once was. In fact, posting is not as important as it once was. Posting to usenet is becoming more like talking to a stranger on the sidewalk in the middle of an unfamiliar city. No one really cares what anyone says, no one will remember who said anything in particular, and no one knows who anyone else is, and no one wants to be known as anyone in particular.
The Google-God is gobbling usenet history ... ever so slowly ... but nevertheless, gobbling usenet history. One day, there won't be any usenet history in the archive that means anything at all.

No dentist? Get one this week! Pronto.
I always recommend that everyone get in touch with a friendly and helpful dentist as soon as possible. If you do not have a dentist (45% of Americans), get an appointment and get your teeth checked. If you can't go for the $4,000. treatment plan, just tell the Doc in regular plain old English, "Its not in my budget."
But get an idea about what problems might be there. If the doctor-patient relationship is not working for you, you still got time to hop off the train and hop onto the bus. If you wait until you have a real dental emergency, then you are caught. You are going to be in the train station before you know it. You do not have enough time to check out the best place (or way of getting there) for you.
Some more amusing thoughts about, "Getting some new patients."
The time was the late 60s. A new patient called for an appointment.
"Jim Garrison sent me," he said.
I thought about it for a minute. Jim Garrison? Who was Jim Garrison? It didn't remind me of anyone I knew. Perhaps this was a neighbor or even a referral from a nearby business owner.
Next week, another patient with the same story.
"Jim Garrison sent me."
On and on. Over the next several weeks, there were 5 or 6 more. By this point I was just too baffled for words. Then one day, a phone call. Another new patient.
"Your name?"
"Jim Garrison."
The day arrived. This dude came over for his dental visit. Afterwards, I was kind of cool. I casually asked,
"Thanks for sending over so many nice referrals. By the way, I'm curious. You've already referred me 7-8 patients and you don't even know me. What's up?"
"Precisely," he said. "I sent my friends over and then I asked them the important question."
"What's that?"
"How'd you like the new dentist?"
We both laughed. He remained a patient for many years. Of course those days are gone. This was over 30 years ago, but I can still remember seeing his face, his expression and hearing his voice.
One day, he needed to have a wisdom tooth removed. The week before the appointment, he said, "Now I am going to have a chance to rate you for myself. I do not know anyone who needs a wisdom tooth removed." It went okay.
I had another guy who was a long-standing patient who had sent me at least 20 referrals. The only problem was that this guy only came to the office one time every 3-4 years. When he did come, I had a nice choice of cavities to fill. You see, he had a large cavity in every single tooth in his mouth.
Perhaps, I could have motivated him better, but probably not. I was content to be his "once-in-a-while dentist" and accept all of those nice referrals. The only thing that bothered me was the embarrassment when he told his friends about his "great dentist." I imagined their look of disbelief when he flashed his beautiful smile with huge cavities in every tooth. So it goes.
We frequently had the situation where an older practitioner in the neighborhood retired or became ill. I'd get a call from that office (possibly from the doctor's wife) thanking me and apologizing for sending over so many patients! "I know that you guys are so busy, but thanks for making some time for our patients, too."
It was that kind of world. We did our best to help one another. We were appreciative of those who helped us too.
Cheers,
Joel
Joel M. Eichen, D.D.S.
PS- I frequently worked 12 and 14 hour days. I had associates who helped out so I could take some 3 or 4 day weekends. It was a pretty fulfilling type of practice.
