Hello,
I have a friend who has been using invisalign for almost a year now.
Every couple of weeks she goes to her orthodontist to get the newest
retainer. After getting her latest retainer she started experiencing
some more then usual pain in her teeth. She made an appointment to see
her orthodontist two days later by which time the pain had receeded.
It turned out that one of her teeth had died and now she needs a root
canal.
Is it possible that the pressure caused by the invisalign braces
caused the tooth to die?
If so, is this a well known risk? Do people know of similar stories.
Any answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated. We
are trying to work out what happened, and what are the risks in
continuing the invisalign treatment.
Tahnk you in advance,

Anything is possible, BUT it seems unlikely in the extreme to me. I
have only rarely seen an endodontic problem where the probably cause was
orthodontic, and Invisalign appliances are probably capable of placing
far less pressure on a tooth than fixed appliances. If the tooth is not
decayed now and does not have at least a somewhat deep filling at it the
possibility should be looked at.

Braces or Orthodontics in general is a risk to the health of the
teeth.
But we take that risk just to look good just like patients who under
go liposuction and risk death.
If that tooth died as a result of invisalign it would have died
anyway.
To answer your question it's not a common occurance but it could
happen.
