What is Topacal C-5?
Topacal C-5® contains Phoscal® which is a chemical complex formed
between a protein extracted from milk (the casein phosphoprotein) and
very small particles of calcium phosphate, the principal chemical
building block of teeth and bones.

Everyone knows that milk is a natural source of calcium and phosphate
and that dairy products are good for your teeth and bones.   The milk
protein based formulation is designed to significantly augment the
natural salivary “remineralization” process.   Topacal helps buffer
plaque acids and forms a barrier at the tooth surface which helps
minimise the adhesion of bacteria.   At low pH the calcium phosphate
is released and boosts the ability of saliva to prevent
demineralization and promote remineralization by natural means.

Healthy Teeth
To understand why Topacal C-5® and Phoscal® are important we must
first understand that healthy teeth depend on maintaining a balance in
the natural daily cycle of mineral loss from our teeth
(demineralization) and mineral replacement (remineralization).

Every day our teeth lose some of their mineral content because they
are attacked by the acids in the foods we eat and the acids produced
in dental plaque.   Every day these lost minerals are replaced by the
calcium phosphate carried by saliva.

These two processes are balanced in an ideal world in which everyone
has a sensible diet, everyone practices good oral hygiene, there are
no diseases and nobody consumes any medication!   In the real world,
of course, very few people satisfy all of these requirements and many
people have dental problems.

The imbalance between demineralization and remineralization can happen
when there is either too much demineralization of too little
remineralization.

Too much demineralization occurs when acidic conditions in the mouth
occur regularly or for extended periods of time.

Too little remineralization most commonly occurs when we do not have
enough saliva.

Topacal C-5® corrects this imbalance by assisting saliva to prevent
demineralization and promotes the remineralization process to improve
tooth enamel.
