I had #20 root canaled today. So far so good. My doc put me on
Penicillin straight away as well. Quick question though...he did the
first part of the root canal today and put the temporary filling in
place. He said that he put something called polychloro something or
other into my root to kill off any bacteria in the roots. He said
that it "kills anything it touches"
What exactly is this called and how does it kill the bacteria (poison,
anti-biotic, etc)? It sounds like it has chlorine in it or something
no?
Thanks.

Unless the canal won't dry.

Could be an older antibiotic which as I recall is a good medication.

Inhibits cell wall synthesis .......
Beta-lactam ....... more if you want to know!

Probably PMCP--polychloro monophenol. We used to put some pretty
powerful medicaments such as PMCP or formocresol into the pulp chambers
of infected teeth. We rarely do this anymore. My feeling is that it
did lower the bacterial load in the teeth, but it's better to
mechanically remove the infected debris. Furthermore, these medicaments
are pretty irritating if they get on the soft tissue or to the end of
the roots. I rarely use it anymore.

PMCP...that's the one! Thanks. He did spend a good deal of time
mechanically removing whatever remained of the pulp and puss, and then
I suppose he put the PMCP in to make sure that he nailed everything.
Yeah, I don't see much about PMCP in google. Even at that, most of
what I see is commentary about how calcium hydroxide is a better
replacement for PMCP. It must be an older treatment that isn't in use
as much, as you've indicated. Thankfully, this #20 root canal is
going much better than the #19 that I just had root canaled then
extracted. No swelled face, no debilitating pain, no advil needed,
etc.
