A dentist told me today that a certain antibiotic taken when you are age 7
or 8 can cause mottled teeth. He did tell me the name of it but I promptly
forgot.
Is this true? Still true? or has that antibiotic been phased out years ago?

Tetracycline taken while the teeth are developing will be incorporated into
the tooth structure and cause mild to severe staining ranging from light
yellowish to very dark greys/browns.I think most physicians are aware of
this these days and would only use tetracycline in a developing youngster as
a last option (not likely since there are so many alternatives).

Tetracycline, if taken during tooth formation can cause very dark and
grey teeth. I'm sure that if you search for the term and 'tooth' on
google you'll find numerous sites about it.
I'm unsure of the current status of this antibiotic.

Only thing I would add is that since the permanent incisors begin to
form as early as birth to six months, tetracycline should NOT be given
to children with forming teeth. The crowns of the anterior teeth form
earlier, so actually the earlier tetracycline is given the greater the
potential esthetic damage.
Most tetracyclines at this point are pretty mediocre as antibiotics for
most infections, so their utility is pretty limited anyway. I
personally think long-term use of fairly low-dose (say, 250 mg/day) by
dermatologists for acne or rosacea is reprehensible and should stop. It
only encourages bacterial resistance and yeast infections.
